About Me

You are The Devil

Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession

The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.

Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

My Interests

Literature, especially short fiction, outdoor activities, hiking, bodybuilding, beer, wine, chocolate, and Hump-Catting (it's really similar to Bear-Blasting.)

I'd like to meet:

First things first: I'm here mostly to stay in touch with old friends and to blog once in a while. I'm not interested in your webcam, your get-rich-quick scheme, or your cleavage. Now, as for people I'd actually like to meet: Oscar Wilde, Antonin Artaud, Tiny Tim, Musashi, and a lot of my ancestors. Among the living, Schwarzenegger, Paris Hilton, Henry Rollins, Rose McGowan, Barack Obama, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Martin Gore, Judi Dench, Terry Walters, and too many more to name. I generally like people. Seriously.

Music:

John Prine, Johnny Cash, Lordi, Mika, Lyle Lovett, Brian Eno, Clannad, Dead Can Dance, and too many more to name. You get the idea.

Movies:

Anything by Tim Burton, Jeunet et Caro, Luc Besson, etc. I like dark, spooky stuff, and absurdist comedy. I often like French films, though I don't speak French. David Lynch does great stuff, but if you try to pretend that you 'get' his films, you're full of crap.

Television:

Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Dead Like Me, and yes, Family Guy.

Books:

Recently read "No Country For Old Men" by Cormac McCarthy. Liked it in some respects, not others. Currently Reading "20th Century Ghosts" by Joe Hill, and it is exceptional. Can't go wrong with Vonnegut, and I liked Hunter S. Thompson's work. If you haven't read any of Stephen King's short stories, you're missing out. (Don't believe his detractors, the only people who say he's a bad writer are failed writers.)

Heroes:

I'm gonna go with influences: Henry Rollins, Edward Gorey, and Antonin Artaud. (You don't know who he was, stop pretending.)

My Blog

Whats important, whats interesting, and that what is not.

I have taken a good hiatus from blogging, in part because I'm busy, but in large part because I came to a point where I didn't feel that the things I wrote about were very important.  I used to e...

I've finally had it.  I've just read the straw that broke the camel's back.  I can't hold my tongue any longer.  There are some things that need to be put in writing, things that are lo...

Dead rodents, massive bulges, and the fate of the world.

It's going to be a short work week for me, as it will be for many of you no doubt.  Folks like their long weekends here in the South, I've noticed.  Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, and...

...and in the end, we become that which we despise.

I have become a recluse.  My job has me getting up early, and my circadian rhythm has acquiesced, so now I wake up at the crack of cock-a-doodle-dawn, whether I like it or not.  I also get t...

Tigers, Zinc, and the unknown.

Okay, it's 5:04 a.m. as I start to type, and I'm still puzzling out the details of the dream I woke up from.  I've been taking a Zinc and Magnesium supplement to promote sound sleep, and it's bee...
