How's it going? Just let you know about me... I was born in Dallas, Tx and raised there until I was 13. I did everything from drawing, to acting and singing for musicals, to playing in the band(not going to say what instrument, you'll have to guess). I got my artistic attributes and organizational skills from my father and mother. I got my corny sense of humor from my dad and my love to laugh at corny jokes from my mom. So, most of the time I'm laughing at myself.
At 13, I moved to upstate New York. My father worked for Kodak so he got transferred and took the family with him. I continued all of the activities I did in Texas and even added the swim team to my list of after school activities. I only swam because there weren't enough swimmers on the team but I was pulled to the sport by being asked to be a diver. I dove Varsity from sophmore year to my senior year where I was voted one of three captains on the team.
I never really did that well in high school except for math and science so rather than going to college, I decided to join the Marine Corp. My older brother helped me pick that service by saying that the only one worth going into was the Marine Corp. I decided to take his advice and then he decided to go in with me. Yep, that's right, my brother and I went to boot camp together and were tortured just because of that reason. Before we joined, we would fight like cats and dogs, but ever since we graduated, we haven't fought once. I guess me being called Dr. Evil and him being called Mini Me formed some sort of bond.
I was originally going into the Marines to be a construction engineer but three months before I was supposed to go to boot camp my recruiter asked me if I played an instrument. I told him yes and he told me to switch to that MOS because it was the best job in the Marines. I have to agree that I had a blast my four years in. I got to travel to so many different places and play for so many different people. Places like the Rose Bowl Parade, Ronald Reagan's Funeral, Kuwait and Iraq. Yes, even the band deploys and we do have to pick up our weapons and fight. We were security on base for the first four months and on the fifth month the General decided that he wanted us to pick up our instruments and boost the moral of the troops. We got to have a barbeque in one of Sadam's palaces and play a concert in one of his concert halls.
When I got out, I worked for a hospital, then a prison and finally a hospital again. I don't know, the civilian jobs just seemed too boring for me after everything that I've done prior to that. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. I made up my mind to join the military again. This time though I wanted to do something with the medical field and when the job Mental Health Specialist came up, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, there aren't any medical jobs in the Marine Corp. so I had to join the Army to get the job I wanted.
I went to school for Mental Health at Fort Sam Houston where my life began moving very fast. I would get up at 4:30 am, PT(physical training), eat, go to school until 5:00pm, eat, go to the gym, get home and have just enough time to study a little or return emails.
While I was there I met a lot of great people but the names that stick out the most are Christie and Perry. Every Friday night we would go to the Red Baron or The Recovery Room and get lit up on booze. A lot of great things were said and learned there. I only wish that we didn't move around so much because it always feels like I'm saying goodbye.
I graduated from my school finally and I'm currently stationed in Germany. I knew that I had to see my family and all my friends before I left so I flew to San Diego and New York. I'm going to miss all my friends and wish the best for them just like how they've done for me.
I've been here 13 months and it's been a pretty bumpy road. Hard work and late hours have pretty much drained me of my sanity. Things are looking up though since we got a new commander. I joined the Mental Health field to work with patients but it turns out that the unit I'm with is a field unit. It's not bad, just not what I was expecting. I'm currently practicing my instrument again so that come January I can audition for the Army Band. I miss music too much to not have the time to do it. If I like the Army band then I'll stay in but if not, then I'll go back to the Marine Corps.Well, I passed my audition and I re-classed into the Army Band. I've still got until the 4th of July before my DEROS is up so I'll be in Germany until then. Once that day hits, it's off to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for my next big adventure.
That's my story so far! What's yours?
