Bacchus!!! (Dionysus (Greek mythology) also ass.w/ the Italic Liber), the god of wine not only represents the intoxicating power of wine, but also wine's social and beneficial influences. He's a promoter of civilization as well as a lover of peace, and the patron deity of agriculture and theater. Also known as the Liberator, he frees one from their normal self by madness, ecstasy, or wine. His divine mission was to unify the music of the flute while bringing an end to worries and care. The Bacchanalia was introduced in Rome (c.200 BC) from the Greek culture of southern Italy. The rites were secretly held 3 days a year and attended by women only. Later on men were admitted to these rites and then took place 5 times a month. These festivals involved various kinds of crimes and the planning of political conspiracies. In 186 BC this led to a decree of the Senate (Senatus consultum de Bacchanalibus) inscribed on a bronze tablet discovered in Calabria (1640), now in Vienna. The Bacchanalia was banned in all of Italy except in certain special cases approved specifically by the Senate. Even though there was severe punishment for those who were in violation of this law, the rites did not die out in southern Italy for a very long time. Dionysus = Bacchus and Liber. Liber, "the free one", was a god of fertility and growth, and married to Libera. Liberalia, his festival, was held on March 17.
