Music has always been the center of my life. When I was a kid, 6... maybe 7 years old, growing up in Central Florida, I learned to sing harmony by singing along with my Aunt Gina and the Monkees . I can still hear her saying "No, I'm singing that part. You have to sing what Micky's singing." I sang in the Forest City Baptist Church choir, took piano lessons and, in 6th grade I joined the school band, learning to play flute. One year later my dad was transferred to New Orleans, music capitol of the world. In high school, I discovered the acoustic guitar and started singing with my best friend, Kathleen. Our guitar teacher, Kim Cantwell, introduced us to a wonderful little coffeehouse called the Penny Post (it's still there, only now it's called the Neutral Ground ). The coffeehouse was a musical wonderland. I sang with, played with and learned from some of the most talented musicians New Orleans has ever known, such as (in no particular order) Richard Blackmon , Gina Forsyth , John Parker, Jack Neilson, Mark Saucier , Dave Dupree, Bud Tower, Kim Cantwell, Leigh Thymer, Kathleen Short, Carol Schaffers, Billy deCastro ... the list goes on and on. I started playing the Penny Post in 1978 and was still playing the Neutral Ground when Katrina hit. As a matter of fact, I was
the last person to play before Katrina hit.
I evacuated for Katrina, running to higher ground in rural Mississippi and fell in love with living in the country. Richard Blackmon and I began performing again as Cat's Meow . Along the way I met new and talented friends and have traded the coffeehouse for bars. Michael Gaines and I would play at the Rebel in McComb on Thursday nights and then he introduced me to Natchez. I felt like I had come home. I was performing solo at the Under the Hill Saloon and then one day the meanest, baddest guitar player I've ever met walked in and said "mind if I sit in?". Scott Nisula's lead guitar took the music to incredible levels. Bass players and drummers started showing up to sit in and eventually Barefoot Tendencies was born. The band is now me singing and playing acoustic guitar, Scott Nisula on lead guitar, Robert Willard on bass and Daniel Scott playing drums. You can come out and party with us every Sunday around 3pm at the Saloon. I also perform solo at the Saloon every Tuesday night around 8pm.
