marina del ray
sunshine on a small hilltop and the sound of young worcestershire from the barn. marina del ray are at it again with their major words and minor chords as they prepare for another round of gigs upstairs in pubs, downstairs in bars but never in a lady's chamber unless formally invited. what a polite bunch they are with their cheeky grins, expensive aftershave and unshaven chins! you may well love them, too.
sometimes electric, sometimes acoustic but always devoted to the song and the performance. marina del ray are very selective and play all kinds of places if it pleases them....but they are not easily persuaded or dissuaded. if they fancy it, they'll do it but only on their own terms. some people love them for it.
we stay a while and enjoy the song through the cracks in the wall at the back of the barn before slipping away in the late morning sun and across the field back towards the town. i hope you find them, too.

One of the quirkiest but most entertaining outfits doing the rounds at the moment is the off-beat rockers Marina Del Ray, who I caught at the regular Black Sheep club night at the Horn And Trumpet in Worcester.
This, surprisingly, was a little more of a subdued set from this foursome - contrasting with the Worcester Music Festival format, which was almost pure stand-up in places - especially when shamelessly promoting the Marina Del Ray approved range of tacky merchandise!
Marina Del Ray "borrow" musicians from other Worcestershire bands
Don't be fooled, though, this outfit has original quality in bucket loads and a trademark standout number with the tongue-in-cheek Company Car.
Bands who combine great music with a bit of humour between numbers aren't exactly two-a-penny, so it's great to find another one to step up to the spot vacated by the likes of the much-lamented And What Will Be Left Of Them? and the legendary 36 Stone.

The Pyramid Party is as good as a little festival could be - great venue, friendly people, excellent catering and an intriguing selection of music from the border counties and beyond.Spread over three days and nights the whole thing was bathed in sunshine which made the thing even more laid back than expected. Who could fail to be enticed by the prospect of early summer sun, a cool beer, distant views of the hills and a choice of two stages? I was seduced by it. The main stage was well populated by rocking bands, the smaller acoustic stage was much more enticing on both Saturday and Sunday....And Saturday's sunniest interlude was Marina Del Ray whose snappy songs and snappier playing kicked off the day. A Nick Drake cover album in the summer and an album of their own later in the year, said the guitarist in conversation with a sunbathing crowd. A cracking little band...who played in shirts and ties. Neat, boys. So, forty or so bands and a wonderful weekend had by all. Write it in your diary for next year and given that it's discretely advertised, go out of your way to find it next year.

Marina Del Ray are dressed in their finest matching shirts and ties and despite their jokes it seems unlikley that they had made their way from evensong to the cosy confines of this bar. I could be wrong but they do seem to be a very knowing troupe! And they are absolutely excellent as they draw an audience to the stage to smile at their slick playing and snazzy songs. The songs are seamless with no space between them as if they are determined to squeeze in as many as possible into their thirty minutes. The sound spirals up and down, the intimate singing and literate lyrics demand close attention and raise smiles around the place...uplifting and energising! And they sound like? Sorry, can't pin them down. Marina Del Ray are so focused, so tight that they demand bigger and better. It can only come. In the meantime they vare welcome as a blue sky day and summer warmth. Irresistible.

The Island Bar is a great venue in a good central location, both for music and general drinking and particularly if you like good cocktails (their speciality).
First up tonight was Marina del Ray - a personable bunch of gents from Worcestershire playing, as their name implies, with a heavy Americana influence. Nice to see a stand up bass, and small scale drum kit, sensitively played to accompany the strong vocals and acoustic guitar.
