I'm FBI Special Agent Clarice Starling. I worked close with Doctor Hannibal Lecter during the Buffalo Bill case, and I was the one who found Jame Gumb. I later fell from grace during a drug bust and then become reconnected with Dr. Lecter. My work is very important to me, but recently the FBI hasn't been the guardian angel it used to be.
A lot of people are interested in my history. I was raised in a small town in West Virginia. When I was about nine years old, my father—a night watchman—was shot dead by robbers. I went to live on a farm with a foster family, from which I briefly ran away in horror when I witnessed horses and lambs being slaughtered. (The title of the book refers to the screaming she heard from the lambs, and Dr. Lecter's correct assumption that I was trying to find a a way to silence the screams, which had haunted me for years afterward.) I spent the rest of my childhood in a Lutheran orphanage. I graduated from the University of Virginia at the top of my class and became a star student of the training school, attracting the attention of FBI Chief of Behavioural Science Jack Crawford, who selected me to interview Lecter.
