Youngbloods Jazz Quartet

About Me

I created this profile using the Skize.com MySpace Profile Editor which is really easy to use. You can also check out their other selection of MySpace Layouts !
The Youngbloods Jazz Quartet (YJQ) is a jazz performance ensemble that was first developed by Shanelle D. Jenkins (trumpet) and Christopher S. Hall (bass). Its core members have included Edwin Briscoe (Drums) and Charles Lovell (piano/keyboard), and has since grown to include a litany of talented local musicians. Contrary to its name, the Youngbloods Jazz Quartet caters to both young and not so young audiences whom appreciate jazz music. The quartet can also be expanded to accommodate a wide range of musical genres, including funk, R&B and salsa. The mission of the Youngbloods Jazz Quartet is to simultaneously expose the historical and musical significance of The New Amsterdam Musical Association (NAMA) to jazz and the Black community, while appealing to a new generation of musicians, artists and spectators by putting a modern spin on traditional jazz standards. The efforts of the YJQ have been supported through a grant from the Urban Arts Initiative awarded to Shanelle D. Jenkins in 2006, and the constant donations of a music loving public. Through lofty recommendations and its involvement with the New Amsterdam Musical Association (of which all of the musicians are members), the Youngbloods have performed for private social functions and corporate events at The World Famous Apollo Theater, Central Park Boathouse, The Rainbow Room, BB Kings' (Lucille's), Harlem Summerstage ('04), opened for Wycliffe Gordon and the Neal Caine Ensemble at St. Nicks Pub and performed for Harlem Independent Living Centers Alcohol Awareness Day. Members of the YJQ have also performed at various New York City live music venues such as Studio 54, Crash Mansion and Webster Hall as well as internationally.NAMA is a non-profit organization established in 1904 and incorporated in 1905. The New Amsterdam Musical Association was created by a group of Black musicians that were excluded from the American Federation of Musicians Local 310 (Local 802) as a result of segregation. NAMA's mission was developed by twelve forward thinking musicians to draw together trained musicians from New York and the surrounding areas together. Its members included Eubie Blake and James Reese Europe. Today, NAMA functions as a safe space for the development of the beginning, intermediate and advanced musician, recreational services, a need-based music education program and community events that appeal to a diverse range of people in Harlem and beyond. It remains to be the oldest African-American musical organization in the nation, if not the world.
