Vagora was conceived out of the minds of Cephas DeRaven and original bassist Lilith in 2003 to create somethingpunk, experimental, genre defying, and above all, something original. Since that time, members have come and gonein the form of bassists, guitarists and drummers. However, the tireless need to create something fresh and artisticin a stagnant music scene has remained, even with the rotating lineup. The sole purpose of Vagora(who take theirname from a fictional piece that singer/founder Cephas DeRaven wrote) is to be as inventive as it can be and toachieve the ever elusive "signature sound". What do you call a band that has influences that are as diverse as oldschool OI punk, NIN, My Chemical Romance, Ignite, The Smashing Pumpkins, Quicksand, Green Day and Placebo? You callthem Vagora. They have a sound that is truly all their own yet pays homage to their musical inspirations. "I wantedto start a band that encompassed everything that I liked to listen to." states lead singer/founder DeRaven. Thequintet have been playing regularly all over the local New England area via open mic nights in their earliestinceptions to becoming a staple presently in the thriving live music scene of Rhode Island, gaining sizablefollowings on the entire east and west coasts of the States and even Europe.
The band calls East Providence, Rhode Island home, but taking Vagora nationwide is something the band takes veryseriously. "The desire to tour consistently and frequently is definitely there for all of us, and we make sure thatwe schedule Vagora around our daily lives to make it a priority. It's never a question for any of us." saysguitarist Erich Danger. Vagora have two DIY demos to their credit in 2006's "Nurture" and 2007's "Angel E.P.". Theyhave also appeared on several compilations in the New England area and nationally. The core lineup is rounded outby drummer Marcus Hyde, bassist/songwriter/vocalist Jon Whitehurst, and Blitzkid's TBMonstrosity on guitar and vocals. To quote TB directly, "What makes this band so special is that you have five guysall willing to do the work it takes to be in a band, you have five songwriters and at least four singers. " Vagora's live shows are filled with atmosphere, emotion andunbridled energy. Whether they are handling the pure power pop balladry of the song "Autumn Unsure" or theextremely raw and fast punk of "Ashley Blue" and "Seventeen", they are a whirling dervish of assault to the ears.
"Sometimes, people don't realistically know what to make of us because we manage to do drop D metal-tinged soundsto ballad stuff to power pop to punk rock, yet we still sound like the same group of people playing each song. Atthe end of every show, kids will say that they liked the entire show and everyone always has a different song thatthey say is their favorite." laughs DeRaven. "I tell people that Vagora are eccentric dealers of death and dreams."says TB, "What that means is that you can embrace the darkness of our music and the harshness of it right alongwith the dreamy, more poppy things that we do. Our music IS eccentric, it's left of center and it's somethingfamiliar at the same time. Vagora are as close as you can get to hearing what a schizophrenic outburst would soundlike sonically." DeRaven admits, "We really are organized chaos live!"Vagora are currently recording their debut full length CD, "Agoraphobic" in Williamsburg, MA with localengineer/producer extraordinairre Clay Neely( who also produced and/or recorded The Capps, Gein and the GraveRobbers, Ghoul's Night Out) at the helm over at Black Coffee Sound. The expected DIY release date is winter of2010, with extensive touring to follow. In the meantime, Vagora are doing what they do best- making people guessand sing along at the same time, and they will not stop until they are a virtual household name.
