Bold, Blond, & Brassy and sick of people asking me to be their friend , when I'd never be their friend if I really knew them. Which means, if you like Coldplay or you're in Coldplay-it's doubtful I'm going to be your friend- in real life or myspace life!I thought I'd put that in the beginning to eliminate half the population.
Vintage clothing has always been my chosen passion. Watching Bmovies and growing up in New York led me into a life crossed with music & fashion. After being a fashion buyer for major NY dept stores & being told I was a square peg in a round hole (thankfully);I ended up in London because of the music. Being brought up on Elvis & rock & roll, & then the Rolling Stones-I guess London's interpretation of American rhythm & blues & then punk & then rockabilly enticed me.
After a teen friendship with Johnny Thunders following the MC5 & the Stooges- a chance to be the Heartbreakers road manager after the Anarchy tour; and Loopeys Lens photo column in ZigZag magazine complete with punk nude centrefolds;led me to a love affair with London & Smutty of the Rockats. After marrying & moving back to the States & subsequently splitting-fashion & music were always my mixed choice of career opportunities.
THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT started in NY when I realised I was doomed to always being my own boss and a lifetime of collecting forced me to sell before someone stole it all, which was prone to happening at that time. Moving the business to London in 1988, my premise always was & still is- SEX SELLS. Girls want to look like pinup stars & boys want to look at 'em.
A chance encounter with ace character Jake Vegas led us to starting the first New Burlesque club in London called More Than Vegas- infamously raided by Westminster council for not having a strip licence! this led me to the position of now speaking about new burlesque in museums. My-how times have changed. Soon after, in the quest for the perfect martini, the first of the cocktail culture cubs was started thanks to Dick Bradsell. Named Blue Martini after Fritz Langs' fabulous chatup line, it's been highly imitated. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, hats off to all the new burlesque clubs, cocktail clubs, etc that have surfaced in their wake.
Now living & working in London with the Baron von Swankster, singer of The Bad Breed & Cad of The Girl Can't Help It (being both & the same); I'm lucky to live a life I love.
Long live rock & roll, individualism, enterpreneurship, and all those people who strive to be a shepherd & not sheep and dance to their own tune.
