Las Vegas means "the meadows" in Spanish. In Nevada, there are more than 209,000 slot machines normally operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The first neon sign appeared in Las Vegas in 1954 at the Boulder Club. The bell is the oldest symbol still used on today's slot machines. The average annual temperature in Las Vegas is 66 degrees. It would take 288 years for one person to spend one night in every hotel room in Las Vegas. Shrimp consumption in Las Vegas is more than 60,000 pounds a day. That's higher than the rest of the country combined and adds up to 22 million pounds per year. The Stardust was the first hotel in Vegas to add a sports book to its casino. Nickel slots on the Strip pay back anywhere from 86.9 percent to 92.8 percent of what they take in. Las Vegas casinos never use dice with rounded corners. It's estimated that every day Las Vegas casinos give away $3 million of freebies (more than $1 billion per year) just to get customers through their doors. It's against the law to pawn your dentures in Las Vegas. The Horseshoe was the first Las Vegas casino to install carpeting. A vagrant once turned a $400 Social Security check into $1.6 million playing blackjack in a Las Vegas casino. According to suppliers, purple is the favorite ink color in daubers used by Las Vegas Bingo players. The beam of light atop the Luxor in Las Vegas is made up of 39 individual lamps. Each xenon lamp costs $1,200 and will last about 2,000 hours. The electric bill for the Luxor beam is $51 an hour. Las Vegas has the highest number of unlisted phone numbers of any U.S. city. The iconic, waving neon cowboy, located at Vegas' Pioneer Club downtown, is named Vegas Vic. Frank Sinatra was the first Vegas headliner to earn $100,000 per week. It was discovered by Spanish explorers in 1829 who were attracted to the area because of the natural springs and meadows that existed here. They called the valley Las Vegas, which is Spanish for "The Meadows."The first modern-era settlement was established by Mormon missionaries in 1855, but the project was abandoned in 1858. This original mission, known today as the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, became a haven for desert-worn travelers and trailblazers lured by the region’s gold and silver.Settlers finally moved into the area to stay in 1865. That year Octavius D. Gass, set up a ranch on what is now downtown Las Vegas. Gass lost the ranch to Archibald Stewart, whose wife, Helen, later sold the ranch to Montana U.S. Senator William Clark. Many people credit Clark as the one who gave Las Vegas its start when he used the land to finish the railroad line between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. With the arrival of Union Pacific Railroad in 1905 and the auction of land parcels owned by the railroad, Las Vegas was off and running as a typical frontier town.Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911 by an act of the Nevada legislature. The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce was founded that same year.Las Vegas was fairly insulated from the Great Depression. Jobs and money were plentiful because of railroad development, legal gambling and the construction of Hoover Dam. Ironically, the dam also generated the start of the tourism industry as thousands of visitors came to watch the dam being built. When the Nevada Legislature legalized casino gambling as a means of raising tax revenue in 1931, Nevada’s ..1 industry began. Before long the hotel/casino resorts on Las Vegas Strip were rivaling the downtown area. Growth continued at a steady pace through the 1970s with a brief lull in the 1980s when the community felt the effects of nationwide recession. As soon as the economy bounced back, people flocked to Las Vegas in record numbers, first as tourists and later as permanent residents.During the late 1980s, there weren’t enough construction workers and equipment to meet the demand. Las Vegas soon became the darling of the nation’s economists who were amazed at the growth in construction and residences. The opening of the Mirage Resort in 1989 kicked off a growth spurt of resort properties on the Strip, which didn’t skip a beat in the first half of the 1990s. By 1996, seven new themed megaresorts had opened. At the close the millennium, four more resort properties were added to serve the more than 30 million tourists who visit Las Vegas annually. Always stand on hard 17 or higher if the dealer's showing card is 7 or lower.Always stand on hard 13 through 16 if the dealer's showing card is 6 or lower, but hit if the dealer's showing card is 7 through Ace.Always stand on hard 12 or higher if the dealer is showing 4, 5 or 6.Hit a hard 12 if the dealer's up card is 2, 3, 7 or higher.Hit until you have at least 17 against a dealer's 10.Hit a soft 17 against a dealer's 10.Standing on 17 and lower relies entirely on the dealer's busting to win. Since you cannot bust a soft hand with just one hit, do the following:Hit soft 13 through 17 against a dealer's 7 or higher With hands of three or more cards, always hit soft 13 through 17 Double down with two-card soft 13 through 17 against a dealer's 5 or 6. (You can only double down with your first two cards) Double down soft 17 against a dealer's 3 Double down soft 15 through 17 against a dealer's 4 Most players will stand on soft 18, but you may find that in the long run you will be better off to hit a soft 18 if the dealer's up card is 9, 10 or Ace , stand on soft 18 if the dealer's up card is 2, 7 or 8, and double down if the dealer shows a 3, 4, 5 or 6 Always stand on soft 19 or higher.BACCARATBaccarat is really a game of chance and there is no need to know the third-card rules. In any case, play is closely monitored by the casino dealers and errors are very rare. Avoid standoff or tie bets altogether. Don't bet against a streak of either Banco (banker) or Punto (player). After three consecutive Banco or Punto, either stop betting until the streak chops or bet with the streak. Don't be put off by the 5% tax on Banco wins. This is compensated by the fact that Banco wins more times than Punto. If a shoe chops four times in a row bet with the chop on the fifth bet and treat the chop as a trend until it breaks with either a bank or player duplication. SLOT MACHINESUse Your Players Card If I could give only one tip to casino players, this would be the one I would pick. Your Player’s Club Card can earn you comps for food, lodging, and shows. Some casinos even offer cash back for your play. When you do not use the card you are essentially depriving yourself of valuable incentives the casino is giving back to the players. Some slot players think that using their slot cards affect the way a machines pays out. This is a myth and a very expensive mistake for those who believe it.Read the Pay Tables Looking at the pay table of the machine can help you judge the frequency that the machine returns a winner. If you see that there are a lot of combinations that return smaller wins, then this machine will usually have a larger hit frequency than one that has fewer winning combinations that pay back larger wins. Some players like a lot of smaller wins more often.Play Full Coin in Progressive Machines. Progressive machines offer large jackpots. The big progressive jackpot is made by taking a percentage of all the money played into the machine. You can only win the progressive jackpot if you have are playing the maximum number of coins. Don’t play these machines if you don’t plan to do this.Slot Candles The lights on the top of the machines are called candles. The bottom light is colored and that color can tell you the denomination of the machine. In most cases, the candles on dollar machines are blue, Quarters are yellow, and nickel machines are red.Lock Up a Profit If you hit a jackpot, make sure that you “lock up” a profit. Take your initial playing stakes and a little profit and set it aside. Then play with a small percentage of you winnings. There is nothing worse than the feeling of being a winner and then giving back all your winnings to the casino. I recommend taking a little break after a hitting a jackpot. Savor the win and enjoy that winning feeling.Keep a Log If you hit a jackpot over $1,200 you will be given a W2-G and your winnings will be reported to the IRS. If you keep an accurate gaming log, you can use your losses to offset your winnings come tax time.Slow Down Slow down when you are playing slot machines. There are no prizes for the player hitting the spin button the fastest. Don’t play more than one machine at a time. Playing more than one machine just exposes you more to the house edge. In the long run you will just lose your money faster.Manage your Money Never bring money to the casino that you need for other expenses. If you can’t afford to lose it then you shouldn’t be playing it in the casino. Break you casino bankroll down into several playing sessions. Don’t risk it all in one playing session.Cashing Out. When you are done playing, make sure that you take all your coins from the tray or your voucher ticket from the machine. Do this right away before you collect your personal belongings. Go directly to the cage. Don’t walk around with a bucket of coins. They can be spilled or lost if you set them down. If you are playing a coinless machine that pays you with a paper voucher make sure you cash it in. Some of these have an expiration date making them worthless after a certain period of time.Don’t Purchase Slot Systems. [/br] Slot systems that claim they can show you which machine is ready to hit are a scam. The Random Number Generator determines the winning combinations of the machine. There is no way to determine if a machine is “Due” to hit.Have Fun Slot machines have a larger house edge than other casino games. While winning is nice, in the long run it will cost you money to play. Look at this cost as your price for entertainment. Pick a machine that you have fun playing and enjoy yourself.CRAPSMake a betting selection(s) or establish a pattern of play to your liking and stick to it. If you want to play longer and enjoy the action, stick to the 'pass/don't pass' and 'come/don't come' bets. If you aim to 'hit and run' and winning is a priority, give preference to high-odds bets. Don't plan to win every roll of the dice. Raise as you win, lower as you lose. Never quit after a win.If the table is choppy a good way to hedge your bet is to establish a dont pass bet then place bet the 6 & 8. On the come out roll, place a pass bet and an equivalent field bet, that way if the shooter craps out, you still win in the field, if the shooter wins with 7 or 11 you still break even. Try to do the same as the player with the most chips. If he's a hi roller then use a smaller amount for yourself. Dont press your place bets until you take your winnings down at least once first. Never walk up to a table and throw your money in. Take a moment to review the table, people and the game in progress. I neglected this once and was yelled at by the dealers and players alike. Give people elbow room, if you aren't betting, get off the rail.ROULETTEFor an efficient betting strategy aim to win more money in fewer winning spins.Take into account probability, but don't rely on it. Use it to make an approximate assessment of what you could expect on a long run.If you are influenced by previous results, then learn to bet with the outcome and not against it. You will eventually realize that it makes no difference. If anything, the 'law of unequal distribution' will be on your side.Remember, the two major factors that determine how much you win or lose at roulette are: 1) your luck on the day and 2) deciding when is the best time to quit.On a very bad day, no sum of wagering money or degree of skill will make you a winner. Don't persist. Cut your losses early.Don't challenge the mathematical advantage of the casino. You cannot eliminate or change it and you don't need to. It is not your adversary unless you choose to make it that way and you will lose - slowly but surely. It is relatively small considering the sums of money that can be won or lost in a very short space of time. Think of it as a necessary and acceptable contribution or a tax towards paying the cost of the gaming equipment and salaries of the casino personnel. Remember, you pay it if and when you win only. (See Roulette quiz, the casino advantage - when you win the casino wins.)If you are new to the roulette game, you are probably thinking of the possibility to come up with a mathematical roulette system that excludes luck, but before you attempt at that, consider the next two tips.Mathematics and gambling don't mix. In mathematics you know exactly what will happen. Gambling is the exact opposite, you never know what will happen, otherwise it wouldn't be gambling. If you try to calculate the possibilities of winning mathematically, it is unlikely that you will get anywhere even if there was no casino advantage - no 0, 00.No system tester has ever produced a conclusive positive result for a roulette system - not once. That's because the luck factor will always be missing. If you devise your own system, try it out for real in actual play and don't rely on collected lists of decisions. The free on-line and off-line casino games are useful to carry out preliminary tests. Remember, luck cannot be quantified or spread evenly and recorded lists of decisions will never reoccur again in that order. The probability of a sequence of just four numbers coming up again in the same order is 1/38 x 1/38 x 1/38 x 1/38 = 1/2,085,136. That's one in two million.
