Now for the Official "About Me" Stuff:
Officially or unofficially, Kathy Grant Mahon is known as Canada's Gospel Diva.....read on.
Kathy Grant Mahon is many things - a versatile vocalist, an energetic, prolific and prophetic minister of the gospel, gospel journalist, business woman, philanthropist, both mother and daughter, but most of all she is a WOMAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART.
Kathy has been singing since the early age of 5, and began singing professionally at the age of 17. Throughout her late teens and into her twenties she had been blessed of the Lord to minister before ministers of the gospel, political figures and diplomatic dignitaries. But the fullness of time for God's Word concerning her life was in her thirties.
Beginning in the fall of 1999, on Sunday afternoons, while patrons enjoyed a sumptuous Sunday Brunch Buffet, including breakfast favorites, made-to-order omelets and pastas, Kathy Grant Mahon, with her band, Chosen delivered the dessert. Patrons stand on chairs and wave napkins frantically in the air - theyre not asking for more maple syrup, theyre enjoying the stirring gospel music of Kathy Grant Mahon and Chosen (Centretown News). A concept made famous in New York City, Sunday Gospel Brunch was one of its kind in the city of Ottawa and ran for three years as the only regular and longest running 'Gospel show' in Canada.
Since that time she has appeared before 35 Heads of State including the President of the United States, George W. Bush, the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell; performed at events with, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Vickie Winans, Richard Smallwood, Dorinda Clark-Cole, James Hall, Maurette Brown Clark, Ricky Dillard & New G., Hezekiah Walker & the Love Fellowship Choir, Commissioned and OLanda Draper,The Reverend Al Green and James Brown; at the World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, toured Europe with legendary Blues, Gospel singer and actress, Linda Hopkins as member of the Portugese tour of the Harlem Gospel Singers. She's performed on Canada's 100 Huntley Street, the Bobby Jones New Artist Showcase and subsequently at the Bobby Jones International Gospel Industry Retreat.
Self-managed and self-booked for 13 years, she has achieved many accolades. The year 2002 signaled a visible shift in the direction of Kathy's career when in November, her win at the Gospel Music Association (GMA) sponsored Academy of Gospel Music Arts, held at Prairie Bible Institute, in Three Hills Alberta led to an appearance at the GMAs summer Estes Park, Colorado. Kathys self-titled EP released in January 2003 was nominated for a Canadian Urban Music Award (UMAC), won the 2003 MAJA Award for Canadian Gospel Song of the Year and received a 2004 Vibe Award nomination for Urban Soul Album of the Year.
The complete project "FREE" received multiple nominations including 2004 Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year from the Canadian Gospel Music Association. And in 2005, Kathy received 5 nominations from the MAJA Awards including Urban Performer of the Year, Artist of the Year Album of the Year. She was honored with Female Artist of the Year and National Gospel Song of the Year Best Written Song for her hit Ah Lord. The same album was again nominated for Female Artist of the Year and International Jamaican Gospel Artist of the Year, 2006.
In 2005, after two bold steps of faith, quitting her fulltime job and moving to New York City, she performed for Actress Denise Nicholas book launching; the Shabazz family event (Malcom X's family) including illustrious guests Congressman Charles Rangle, former NYC Mayor David Dinkins, Percy Sutton and many others; at the famed Village Underground Club before Natalie Wilson and SOP, Brian McNight and Mario. She has since been honored to perform before Hollywood greats Danny Glover, Lorretta Devine, Anna Marie Horseford, Michael Beach, singer Tata Vega, Andrae Crouch, Dottie Peoples,Kim Burrell, K&K Mime and Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones.
The personal and perhaps underlying message of KGM and FREE is that dreams and ministries do not HAVE to be aborted. There are many today who feel that they may have gone past their time -- that it is too late and that they have missed their window of opportunity to realize their dreams. Kathy's is a triumphant message -- these three things abide Faith (belief in God and in oneself), Hope (hope that God will deliver you from devastation to celebration), and Love (a love more blissful and amazing than ever imagined). Kathy has experienced this unconditional love, hope and the faith of the forefathers, which has empowered her to minister her testimony in authority and anointing the testimony of a patient and perseverant SURVIVOR.
Notwithstanding all the accomplishments, as she lives out the confirmation of His word, like His servant David, Kathy is seeking after God. Without Him, Kathy knows she can do nothing. Her accomplishments past and future pale in comparison to saving of souls. This thought is the inspiring force in her journey to use her ministry and blessings as a tool of the gospel to bless others.
