BIOGRAPHY
If local bands could be bought at a pet store, Long Island, NY would be the guppy tank; an impossibly tiny enclosure brimming with a similarly impossible number of insignificant, thoughtless little fishies. Little fishies desperately wagging their tails and pursing their lips for attention, never giving thought to the fact that they have been running dangerously low of the one thing that could sustain them: pure, unfiltered, life-giving inspiration.
"This band has gone through a lot of changes since it's inception in early 2006. We've had more members than we've had songs at this point," says Zbigniew Zelga, formerly of Long Island's blast-mosh metal darlings The Ambition, guitarist and founding member of Long Island's As Hell Broke Loose. "The one commonality that's been shared through all of our phases, up till early 2009, was our practice room. We shared the same filthy room with Come For Me My Maker since day one and Marky (now guitarist for Full Blown Chaos) and I are always talking about music. We've been good friends for a long time and it's something we've always done. On one particular occasion an old line-up of AHBL was practicing and Marky was in the room trying to make his gear work, like always. During a break, Marky picked his head up and asked 'Does this music actually mean anything to you?' I think it fucked us all up, because the nonsense we had been playing up to that point really didn't."
Inspiration.
"I took a step back from the band for a bit and realized that there was nothing to the riffs we were wrapped up in. There was no life, no feeling. They were just parts; parts that we stuck together and trudged through a couple times a week," Zbigniew admits. "It was a really important thing for me to realize; honestly it was like a revelation," one that would serve as both guiding light and forging furnace in the months to come. "I knew what I wanted to write about, and I know what I can play. The final step for me was finding other people that weren't clowns, basically." The long search ended up in what can only be called a devastating line-up, consisting of Tom Badamo on vocals, Matt McKasty on drums, Steve Segal on bass, and Michael Acerra on second guitar. With a full band and a full vision, the hard part was over.
Drawing influence from a veritable shopping list of only the most truly terrifying Metal bands that have ever existed, As Hell Broke Loose is destruction incarnate. Equal parts black, death, and thrash metal, their sound is that of worlds ending or, more appropriately, life; hard and cruel. After all, it is life that inspires their sabre-toothed brand of aural apocalypse, and it is inspiration that separates As Hell Broke Loose from the dim-witted legion of dancing guppies that are their unfortunate peers.
In the guppy-tank that is Long Island, As Hell Broke Loose is a feral shark. The rest are just prey.
