Welcome to Electronic Music University!
Mission Statement:
Electronic Music University offers personalized, one on one instruction in all facets of Electronic Music production, remixing, and recording in a state of the art, professional facility. Electronic Music University aims to meet the needs of the many budding Electronic Music producers who find this kind of education lacking in their high school and college music curriculum as well as established DJs and other professionals who desire to enter the world of Electronic Music production. Previously a self taught profession, Electronic Music University now offers the rare opportunity for professional instruction in this exciting, future forward, and ever growing field.
Staff:
Courses for students of all experience levels are now being offered by producer/remixer Scott Orlans. Scott began his journey into music at the age of eight with his first piano. Like a fish in water, Scott quickly became his instructor's best student, regularly performing classical renditions at school functions as well as "random acts of music" at local piano stores, restaurants, and anywhere else a piano could be found. In addition to his classical studies, Scott was deeply drawn to composition and began creating his own works, often performing them alongside the classics to the surprise and delight of his audience. In 1992, Scott auditioned for and was accepted into the highly competitive music program at the prestigious Palm Beach County School of the Arts. Excelling under the instruction of Dr. Orville Lawton, he continued to hone his classical skills while simultaneously studying jazz piano under Mr. Wayne Miller. Missing from the curriculum was a composition program, and Scott relentlessly appealed to be allowed to perform his compositions at school functions, opening the door to budding young composers who had previously been stifled. Upon discovering Electronic Music during his junior year, Scott knew that he had found his life's passion. As a founding member of The Imagination Club, an extracurricular group dedicated to fostering creativity and providing an outlet for students to share their original works, he performed his Electronic Music creations during lunchtime sessions that became the stuff of legend (much to the dismay of Dr. Lawton, who was known to glare over the top of his glasses and say "hmmmmmmm"). In addition to his work at school, Scott became involved with many local bands, becoming a well known and in demand keyboard player. It was during this time that he discovered another love, recording and music technology, which paired perfectly with Electronic Music. In 1996, Scott made his way to Occidental College in Los Angeles to continue his musical education under Dr. Richard Grayson, focusing on composition and improvisation. During these years, he became involved in the rave scene, regularly performing live at local venues. In addition to composing and performing, he continued to develop a profound knowledge of recording technique and the latest technology, absorbing all the information and hands on experience available. In 2000, Scott founded Down Time Productions and Down Time Records, both as an outlet for his own projects and to provide exposure to the many talented but unrecognized artists in the Electronic Music community. Building his home studio from scratch, Down Time Studios was soon to follow. The studio continued to grow over the next few years until finally it outgrew his home and required a professional space. In 2005, Scott secured an exclusive studio space in downtown Los Angeles, the perfect setting to continue his musical endeavors and provide instruction and guidance to aspiring Electronic Music producers. Throughout his musical career, fostering and giving voice to creative individuals outside the mainstream has been a driving force, and that spirit continues today with Electronic Music University.
