About Me

Terrence Edward Johnson otherwise known as Detroit Black is a multi-talented poet, writer and rapper. Born and raised on Detroitâ€™s west side Detroit Black is known for his deep baritone vocals and dark subject matter. When you take one look at him you know that he is one serious dude. He stands 6â€™5 240 and looks as ominous as he sounds. He started out in Detroitâ€™s underground being tutored by the Legendary Big Proof. Proof would give him positive critiques about songs and performances throughout his early career. Detroit Black made use of the constructive criticism to fine tune his art and give passionate performances. At the very young age of 15 Detroit Black was doing shows in places he wasn't old enough to set foot in, places such as the C Note lounge, Ebony Showcase and other clubs throughout the D. After putting in much work throughout the city, Detroit Black was signed to Reality records (now the infamous D Bass records). Through this label he met Bigg Redd, Worldwide, DJ Assault and Mr. De who was his main producer at the time. After recording one album and a group album Detroit Black waited out his contract and got back on the performance circuit. Opening for acts such as Fat Joe, Foxy Brown and 112 Detroit Black honed his craft performing along with other national acts. He then moved to L.A for a year and grinded in LAâ€™s underground before moving on to Atlanta. Representing Detroit vigorously while in Atlanta, Detroit Black continued rocking shows at legendary venues such as The Nike Pavilion, 112, The Atrium, The Red Train and The Crowe's Nest. He befriended artists such as 4-Ize and Archie Eversole and did songs and shows with up & comers Slick Pulla, Young Dro and Fabo. After grinding and living in Atlanta for several years Detroit Black moved back to Detroit to help start the label Drop Musik with his good friend DJ Bigg Redd. Working and reconnecting with his Motown roots, Detroit Black is offering a new refreshing take on urban music with energetic beats and engaging lyrics. Despite many obstacles he maintains his strong love for music. Look for his new mix cd entitled Black Friday to be released .. Musik early spring.
