REM/R3M
A BIT OF HISTORY Rem aka "R3M" was introduced to the late night dance music scene in San Francisco in 1993 when his college buddies thought to pick him up after finishing midterms at UC Berkeley for the Spring Semester and took him to a late night rave party. Initially overwhelmed by the magnitude of the rave scene, Rem would not attend another venue until the winter of 1994
REWIND TO MID 80S Rems exploration into the music world started in the mid 80s listening to the sounds of rap and electro funk music. Rem submerged himself into this emerging culture. He quickly became involved in 3 of the 4 elements of hip-hop i.e. B-boy (break-dancing), Graffiti (creating end-to-end burners) and Lyricists (rapping). He rocked out to the breakbeat sounds of Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force, Grandmaster Flash, Sugar Hill Gang, Afro-Rican, Herbie Hancock, Grandmixer DXT, Gucci Crew, Toddy Tee, Kurtis Blow, UTFO, Whodini, Kraftwerk and many other artists of the time. Rem refers to hip-hop culture as being his first love and admits that he is in it for life!
FASTFORWARD TO 1994 During the winter of 1994, Rem attended a Gathering party in Oakland California with a couple of friends. On this night, Rems roots in the late night dance scene were planted. Rem was impressed with everyone dancing in complete harmony in the great gathering circle. In addition, the music that the DJs played that night was incredible unlike his other previous experience. From this moment on Rem was enthralled with the late night party scene.
Some of Rems favorite event crews include The Gathering, Ghostribe, 6 In Da Mornin, SF House Collective, Come-Unity, Funky Tekno Tribe, and 12 Monkeys. These crews were dedicated to bringing quality DJs and an awesome vibe to incredible venues around the SF Bay Area.
Some of Rems favorite DJs/Producers during this time were DJ Dan, Jim Hopkins, Doc Martin, Darkhorse, Tony, Onionz, Jeno, Donald Glaude, DJ Ghost and Frank Nitty. These DJs always brought energy as well as enthusiasm for expression of their craft to the masses.
1996, THE YEAR I DISCOVERED BASS In 1996, Rem discovered Drum & Bass or Jungle at The 3rd DRUM AND BASS Happening with turntablists Noel, Thad, Abstract, U.F.O. and Hannibal Selecta. This event was pure junglism, turntablism and mixology at its finest. From this point on Rem attended events presented by the B.A.S.S. Kru/Phunkateck as well as Massives that included Drum & Bass artists. This genre quickly became an addiction and now is a way of life. It also inspired Rem to start djing himself in 1998 and studying the intricacies of what he calls the 4th element of Hip-Hop, Turntablism.
CURRENTLY Rem is a member of the Inneractive Entertainment collective. He was a resident at "Slumpville" in 2000, a monthly thrown in Alameda California by Inneractive. This monthly discontinued towards the end of 2000 thanks to the local authorities. After which Rem played for himself for an entire year. At the end of 2001, Inneractive resurfaced and asked Rem to become an official member and he was given the title of Senior Vice President Promotions.
Along with djing at raves, house parties and clubs he has feverishly promoted Inneractive Entertainment around the SF Bay Area as well as in other states. He also launched the promotion of Dieselboys 2x mix cds project_HUMAN & "The Dungeon Masters Guide" for System Recordings as well as the BadHuman (Dieselboy & Bad Company) & Planet Of The Drums II tours that hit San Francisco California. In May of 2002, Rem had his first out of state booking on the island of Oahu at The Wave, Honolulu. He spun alongside DJ Mark Farina as well as island sheroes Sisters In Sound, down-tempo band Quadraphonix, and Reggae/Dub/Jungle champion Sovern-T.
Other monthlies that Rem has thrown in San Francisco are EXPANSION & BANG! at the Sound Factory. ANTHEM at SubLounge. As well as INNERACTIVE at Kingmans Lucky Lounge in Oakland CA and SELECTOR in Berkeley CA.
Rems goal is to be the best that he can be at his craft as well as continue to contribute to the dance music culture with his writing, art and soon, productions.
