Born in Cologne, Germany, Johanna Stein was raised in a musical family and started playing the cello at age 7. She took master classes with Steven Isserlis, Johannes Goritzki, Alexander Baillie, and Robyn Ireland (The Lindsey Quartet) and played orchestra under Ilan Volkov, Lutz Koehler, Gerhard Markson, and Vladimir Ashkenazy among others. She graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow with a Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2007.
Johanna has been playing jazz, pop, blues, rock, fusion and world music since her teenage years and has been teaching strings workshops on world music camp SommerMusikFest (Rüdiger Oppermann - KlangWelten) since 2005.
Currently, Johanna is studying with Jeroen Reuling at the Messiaen Academy/ArtEZ in Arnhem, Netherlands.

'Ensemble Alondra' consists of 4 young, ambitious musicians with a passion for chamber music. Alondra performs in different formations, from duo to quartet. Annemarie van Viegen (violin), Johanna Stein (cello), Celia Garcia-Garcia (piano), and Kees van der Harst (clarinet) initially came together to play "Le Quatuor pour la fin du temps" by Olivier Messiaen. One of the main characteristics of this masterpiece is bird-song, so the ensemble was quickly named after the song of the lark. The versatility of the musicians is reflected in the choice of repertoire (Beethoven, Milhaud, Loevendie, Messiaen, Xenakis, Khachaturian a.o.) and the varying instrumentation, giving the concerts a refreshing character.
