May 24:

Vinny Golia Group:

Vinny Golia - woodwinds, Anthony Shadduck - contrabass, Alan Cook - drums/percussion "The Vinny Golia Trio is a project I started in 1978. Personel and instrumentation has changed through the years, but I still truly enjoy performing in the trio configuration. I think it's the most ideal form for improvisation. The need for writing is very minimal when you have strong personalities in the ensemble that are sensitive and adventuresome. Tonite's version of the trio with Anthony and Alan is no exception." - Vinny

July 19th

The Bill Plake Ensemble

Bill Plake - tenor saxophone, John Fumo - trumpet and flugelhorn, David Tranchina - bass, Christopher Garcia - percussion. The music: a program of original compositions by Bill Plake. This music has been described as “angularly melodic”, drawing from many traditions.: twentieth century classical music (particularly Bartok and Ives) , American folk music, early country and western music, Balkan folk music, Tango and the quartet music of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. It is also firmly rooted in the modern jazz tradition. The pieces are open ended and closed ended forms that allow for a broad improvisational context. Bill Plake began playing music at the age of seventeen after being moved by the music of Albert Ayler and Charles Parker. Entirely self taught as a musician, Bill performs on saxophone and flute, composes, and teaches music. As a performer, he as toured all over the United States, Canada and Europe. He has appeared on numerous recordings as a soloist. Some of the creative musicians of note he has performed with are James Newton, Vinny Golia, Nels and Alex Cline, Steuart Liebig, Michael Vlatkovich, Dan Clucas, David Mott, William Roper, and Steve Adams of the ROVA Quartet.

The Jason Robinson Solo Saxophone Project

American saxophonist and scholar Jason Robinson is fascinated by the relationship between improvised music, experimentalism, and cultural identity. His current performance interests include the intersection of improvisation and composition, new electro-acoustic processing and interaction enabled through software-based technologies, and the relationship between popular music and experimentalism. He performs regularly as a soloist (acoustically and with electronics), with groups he co-leads (Cosmologic and the Cross Border Trio), as a leader of varying ensembles performing his original music, and in a variety of collaborative contexts. He has performed or recorded with Peter Kowald, George Lewis, Anthony Davis, Eugene Chadbourne, Earl Howard, Emily Hay, Jeff Kaiser, Toots and the Maytals, Groundation, Elijah Emanuel and the Revelations, Bertram Turetzky, Mark Dresser, John Russell, Roger Turner, Gerry Hemingway, Kei Akagi, Mel Graves, Liberty Ellman, Babatunde Olatunji, Mel Martin, Marco Eneidi, Lisle Ellis, Raphe Malik, Mike Wofford, Philip Gelb, J.D. Parran, Dana Reason, David Borgo, Nathan Hubbard, Michael Dessen, Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (at Pearl's, San Francisco), the La Jolla Symphony, SONOR (UCSD), and the San Francisco Mime Troupe, among others.
