About Me

Canto Porque Soy … I sing because I am … hija, hermana, amiga, amante, borincana … A daughter, a sister, a friend, a lover, a native of the island of Puerto Rico.Born in the city of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Loely was always surrounded by music. The daughter of ordained ministers, the church was the first to bare witness to Loely’s vocal talents as a soloist in the church choir. Her father, a singer-songwriter and her mother a talented vocalist, together provided Loely with the encouragements she needed to develop her own musical talents.Loely moved to the United States at the age of 5, but her family always insisted she spend her summers in Puerto Rico so that she not lose touch with her Caribbean roots or her native language. As a result, she attributes her compatriots Danny Rivera, Nydia Caro and Jose Feliciano as her most important musical influences.Upon moving from New York to Los Angeles, Loely began to take a more active role in the music business working and learning from some of the Latin music industry’s most legendary artists, such as the late Tito Puente and unforgettable Celia Cruz, as well as the living legend Mr. Eddie Palmieri. From there she went on to arrange and sing background vocals for a variety of different artists that range from rock to jazz. She has also had the pleasure of working with Emmy award-winning film composer Camara Kambon on the Imax film “Michael Jordan – To the Max” as well as Walt Disney’s “102 Dalmatians.”Co-Produced and engineered by 10-time Grammy award-winning recording engineer Rafa Sardina (www.rafasardina.com), whose credits include Luis Miguel and Alejandro Sanz, among many others, as well as Puerto Rico's legendary producer/arranger Cuto Soto (Hector Lavoe, Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Jerry Rivera - to name a few), “Canto Porque Soy” is a collection of life experiences and emotions told through song. The album is a bout self-discovery and healing. Every song chosen expresses something Loely has experienced in her own life. “I wish to take the listener on a journey with me. I’m very selective about the songs I choose to sing because they need to be a part of me and reflection of the woman I’ve become. Loely the friend, the sister, the daughter the lover … so I sing because I am.”The result of these diverse experiences is “Canto Porque Soy,” a fresh mixture of ayer y hoy … yesterday and today … influences and genres that are both old and new, rhythmic and melodic, English and Spanish.Ana Maria Montero “Ecenario” CNN en Español

Band Members: Soloist
Influences: I'm influenced by all great music. Music from my beautiful Island (check out Yerbabuena and you'll see what I mean). But also music that moves the soul (check out Ian Martin) and shakes your ass (Brand New Heavies). Music that inspires you and just takes you to another place spiritually (Dave Matthews Band - I want "Trippin' Billies" played at my funeral) and music that makes you feel like a bad ass (Garbage - the band). Music that makes babies (VINX) and music that helps to mourn the loss of a great love (U2 - "Kite" - I miss Tony). Music like The Dixie Chicks (go see "Shut UP And Sing" and I dare you to not go buy the album). Music that makes you think (The Roots) and music that is so damn clever it makes you laugh (Calle 13). Music from my past - Daniel Santos, one of my grandfather's favorites (Abuelo this one's for you). Music that is such a guilty pleasure you can't even admit you listen to it. (WHAT!!?? WHO SAID I LISTEN TO THE BACKSTREET BOYS!!) Toss in some Rock N' Roll (check out The Kinship), old school hip hop (In my opinion there were no real MC's before Rakim. It all started with him), and finally world music. So in the end I guess I'm influenced by it all. But most of all I'm influenced by life.
Sounds Like: Being the cook that I am here's what you do ... Coje' un caldero (take a pot), toss in a little Buena Vista Social Club, a little bit of Gloria Estefan's "Mi Tierra" album, sprinkle a dash of Nora Jones, toss in a hint of Sade, get a hand full of Nydia Caro, a splash of Jose Feliciano's Puerto Rican soul, and finally a little bit of Danny Rivera's passion and you have my sound. Pull up to the table and I'll serve you a little - Asopao' de Loely - sure to satisfy your soul. It's in our blood and I'm honored and proud to have been born "Un Jibarita Borincana" ENJOY!!!
