Shirley McLean started singing professionally in Jamaica in 1979. "Her first recording for Alvin "GG Records" Ranglin was Memories Linger On "which scored well and started her fan base.There was no turning back for Shirley after this and it was during the Eighties that she made her mark and became a household name in Jamaica with hit songs like "Let Me Go", "Rebel Girl Style" and "Reggae Land". Rebel Girl Style was written by herself and produced and distributed by Sly and Robbie on their Taxi Label.Shirley has received many awards including Female Artiste of the year in 1986 and performed on most major stage shows including Reggae Sunsplash.By the early nineties she became a champion for women's issues as she told the women "Nuh Stay Home and Scrub No Floor" . Other hits were "Roof Over Wi Head", Bigga Boss which got good airplay on BBC and her country and western classic "Mi Country" and "Tea Time" which was done in collaboration with Beenieman and appears on his first album.In the year 2000 she launched her first Album " Shirley McLean Then & Now"
supported by the major players in the music business, Dwight Pinkney, Steve Golding (guitarist -Peter Tosh), Carl Ayton, J C Lodge, Pam Hall, Christine, Dean Frasier, Leebert "Gibby" Morrison. Sly and Robbie.Shirley's theme is always conscious, love peace and unity and survived despite the changing face of the Jamaican music business over the last 27 years. She has managed to produce at least one single each year. Her current single "Sisters" has only received in December and is calling on the ladies to stop supporting men who take part in criminal activities.
