I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I teach private piano, guitar, flute, and oboe lessons. Although I love teaching, I am far more than my occupation.
I love reading, writing, and enjoying nature. I always have a pile of books on my nightstand, at least two other piles on my desk, and a long list of books that I want to read as soon as I've made a satisfying dent in my current piles. I keep several notebooks with long thoughts and strange ideas and stray phrases, and I go for a lot of nature walks.
I believe every walk is an adventure, because in my world clouds are sentient silver ships that sail across the sky-sea, trees listen to the sigh of our souls with ancient patience, rivers offer serene and comforting wisdom, and the flight of a flock of birds contains the secret to happiness. My world is a fantastical place where strands of algae in a local creek are actually tendrils of a mermaid's hair, dried riverbeds are the fingertrails of giants who were bored, and stars are pieces of laughter that will continue to light the darkest nights of our souls for as long as there is some joy in the heart of the humanity.
I believe that I can never exhaust the wonders of the world, that my most inspired imaginings are banal compared to the inexhaustible beauty of the universe around me, and that the secret to saving the world is simple: Love yourself. Love the wonderous part of the universe that calls itself you, and everything else will fall into place.

Belief: the ID Card That Gets You Into the After-Life Party

Last week I re-watched "I Heart Huckabees."  Although my ideas have significantly changed since I first saw it, I was still amused by the scene where the two main characters, Alfred and Tommy, have di...

If There Were No God ... Purpose and Pascals Wager

I wrote this last spring and saved it on my computer with some other thoughts, so I'm not sure if I actually posted this or not.  If I did, it's worth repeating.  If I didn't, it's wort...

Thoughts for My Conservative Friends

Judging from the influx of status updates on my friends list over the last 24 hours, half of my friends are passionate liberals who are relieved and jubilant that Barack Obama was elected president. ...

Why Sarah Palin Terrifies Me

Yet another post I made elsewhere but feel compelled to share.  What can I say?  I'm naive enough to believe that the American people want to listen to reason, rather than fear-mongering rhe...

Why I Support Barack Obama

This is another post that I made elsewhere but feel I should expose to the widest possible audience. For the first 23 years of my life I disdained politics. I thought it was nothing but an endless pa...

Why I Support Gay Marriage

I've been cheating on MySpace, but with an upcoming election of increasing importance, I feel like I should repeat views that I've expressed elsewhere. Let's start by talking about gay marriage. ...

MySpace Surveys

Hello, ladies and gentlemen.  Let's talk about surveys, those endless series of meaningless questions that permeate myspace bulletins and crowd out the few but brave genuine announcements that so...

Ethics and Beauty

I spent four pages journalling about ethics - on what can we base a universal system of ethics, without resorting to an infantile system of rewards and punishments (heaven and hell in the afternoon, ...

Art Is Useless

All art, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, is quite useless.  And all useless things, as Stephen Fry pointed out, are what make life worth living. Art is about shaping order from chaos, transforming ug...

New Age Philosophy

It was one of those days.  I was running late; I hit all the red lights on my way to class; my coffee mug of pens spilled all over the floor when I turned into the parking lot; I had to move...
