Scales, the entertainer from the small town of Athens, Alabama. D. Scales may be from a small town but his talent is big. He is a rare breed, something like a phenomenon, and to even call him multi-talented would be an understatement. He is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and a self taught musician. And like many of the greats before him, D. Scales’ musical aspirations were nurtured in church. Being a lead vocalist, percussionist, and pianist for the church only solidified his calling. He has continually challenged himself to eventually be mentioned in the same breath as Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Nelly, and T.I. and that dream is well within his grasp.
D. Scales began to sing at 4 years old and by age 13 he was creating instrumentals and writing lyrics. He created a group called “Lyrical Minds†and began teaching himself how to record. He later produced two albums for the group and they went on to perform in and also win competitions across Alabama. When the group disbanded, D. Scales was not shaken. He stayed true to music because he knew that it was his destiny. Refusing to give up or to give in, he formed a coalition of artists who were as dedicated to music as he was. Collaboration with Young Squad on the song, “Sit Backâ€, received an overwhelming reaction from students in his hometown and even received airplay from WHRP 93.3 FM.
This taste of success is only the beginning for D. Scales, whose real name is Derrian. He has that country, boy-next-door appeal and that along with his sound and style of music is what allows him to reach a broad audience. “I don’t record anything I know I can’t play for my grandmothersâ€, says D Scales. He continues, “Everyone expresses their feelings differently and I choose to express mine from the heart and I dare to be different.â€
And saying something different is exactly what he does through a blend of crunk, relationship, and true-to-life songs. Whether you want to ease your pain, get a little inspiration, or bob your head, D. Scales knows how to craft a song that you can relate to.
“I’ve encountered the creatures we call ‘haters.’ They are interesting critters but I’ve learned that people will talk about you whether you’re doing good or bad. If I’m doing good it’s not good enough. If I’m doing bad, they try to keep me there or make me feel worse. It never works, and I make HIT songs from it...MOTIVATION...I neva bag down!"“Is Ya Ready 4 Meâ€MyGiftMyCurse
