The three guys and one gal of Your Kisses Cause Crashes came together in the fall of 2008 and set out to find their sound in "the shed," a tiny rehearsal space in a storage lot in East Austin. Andy (vocals, guitars), Michelle (keyboards, synths), and Richard (drums) were high school buddies who found themselves reunited in Austin, while Michael (bass) had just moved into town. After kicking around a handful of simple melodies for a few weeks, the group found its step behind Andy's songwriting which proved eerie, soothing, dreamy, and substantial all at once.
Equally inspired by the jangly hollow-bodied guitar riffs of the Beatles and the Byrds as well as the synth-washed dance beats of the Cure and The Talking Heads, Your Kisses Cause Crashes also drew equally upon its masculine and feminine elements in the creation of its music. With cooing, sighing vocals and nursery rhyme piano riffs offset by crunching guitars and foot-stomping backbeats, each song portrayed a competition between the day and the night, the light and the darkness.
The band played its first live shows at the new-music friendly clubs on Red River, including Red 7, The Red-Eyed Fly, and Room 710. These led to bigger shows at Trophy's, Beauty Bar, and The Tiniest Bar in Texas, and eventually to gigs at Austin's more prestigious indie venues such as Emo's and Club DeVille. The band's simple approach to booking ("play everywhere!") and frequent binge gigging (including a 4-in-3-days-mini-tour) helped them develop a fine crew of "regulars" and made every show feel more like a social event. In addition to fans, YKCC found a group of musical allies in The Seas, Abby Birds, The Dry Season, and Half Heavy and founded a sort of mutual appreciation society that led to more (and livelier!) social events.
Along the way, YKCC extended its reach beyond the friendly confines of Austin and played shows at Rudyard's and Meridian in Houston. With help from live radio interviews and airplay on Rice University's KTRU 91.7, the shows were well-attended and well-received and led to invites (accepted, of course!) to play again. The band was featured in an episode of Nites ATX, a local live music video blog. In addition, the band gained some temporary, if dubious, notoriety by being named to the Onion's AV Club list of Worst Band Names of 2008!
In January 2009, the band made Alta Vista Studio its temporary home to record a 5-song extended play CD. The EP, featuring five songs that form the heart of the band's live set, was recorded and mixed in a series of furious 8-hour sessions. The result was a sparkling and roaring account of YKCC's vision and collective state of mind. From the haunting shape-shifter "These Things" to the anthemic trip-pop "You Suffer Egos" to the sublime "Home is Where I Can't Stand to Be," the record loudly announced the band's current prowess and boldly promised greater things to come. It debuted at 20 on Waterloo Records' Top 50 chart for the week ended February 14, 2009.
With parties, festivals, and road shows added to the mix of its frequent Austin gigs, Your Kisses Cause Crashes won't be resting any time soon. These guys and gal are starting a blaze and they're just getting warm. They're starting a buzz and they just opened the bottle!
