Gravity Biography
Formed in late 2004, Gravity has been pushing musical boundaries since the very beginning. Consisting of Eric Potapenko on guitar, Joe Capka on keyboards, Brian Craft on bass guitar, and Matt Kerschner on drums, this quartet has quickly established itself as one of the premier progressive rock acts in Cleveland with their high-energy music and unforgettable live show.
Not too many bands can call themselves instrumental progressive rock; Gravity, however, is an exception. In place of a vocalist, the “singing†melody lines of the guitar and keyboard front the music while being backed by the driving rhythms of the bass and drums. Gravity incorporates many different styles of music into their material, including rock, blues, heavy metal, and even classical and jazz. Band influences range from classic prog-rock acts like Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis to more modern artists of the genre such as Dream Theater, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani.
Since its formation, Gravity has attained numerous accomplishments. In 2006, the band took first place at the Cuyahoga Community College summer battle of the bands. They also won the opportunity to perform with legendary progressive metal act Kamelot at the famed Agora Ballroom. But in the following year, the band went on to achieve its most prestigious success: taking FIRST PLACE out of over 200 local bands at the 2007 Cleveland High School Rock Off, held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Following this victory, Gravity went on to perform with several national acts over the course of the next two years, some even more than once. They have opened for Dream Theater, one of the most renowned prog-metal acts of this generation, twice in front of very enthusiastic crowds. They have also performed with other well-known acts such as Symphony X, King's X, Edguy, and Sonata Arctica. In the summer of 2009, Gravity performed out-of-state for the first time, at the Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival, a two-day event in Pittsburgh featuring prog acts from all across the world.
In late 2007, Gravity completed and released its 12-song, professionally-recorded CD, Into Oblivion. It has gone on to sell several hundred copies throughout the Cleveland area, and is currently available online and at all live performances. The band is currently working on their second full-length CD, with hopes to release it during the summer of 2010.
As the band continues its journey into 2009, it certainly seems that they have a bright future ahead of them! The band sincerely hopes that you enjoy their music. Their unique brand of "instrumental progressive rock" will definitely leave you wanting more!
Gravity Reviews
"From Ohio come amazing new progressive rock band Gravity and their new CD 'Into Oblivion'. The band kick ass for their ages showing style and maturity. I had to do a little research just to check that what I'm hearing here is for real because the production is top class. The band just put in such an amazing performance that it is hard to think that these lads are so professional at such a tender age. A bright future is ahead of them..."
- Nicky Baldrian from Fireworks Magazine (UK)
"...[The band] tackles a style of technical prog-influenced instrumental hard rock that's never been mainstream except in music stores packed with aspiring Satrianis. Even more astonishing is that the band approaches it with sophistication well beyond its years. Instead of showboating, the group constructs logical, flowing compositions like the dynamic 'Oblivion,' which is marked by the intricate guitar work and evocative keyboard landscapes of prog rock but avoids its digressive overkill. In fact, the band tends to favor songs with focused melodies and a strong sense of direction; 'War Drums' features a forceful beat you can nod your head and even dance to while enjoying the flickering, tumbling guitar lead."
- Free Times Magazine (OH)

"You guys absolutely rocked in Cleveland. The support band I've always wanted ;). Hope we'll play together again soon."
- Oliver Patolai (Kamelot Keyboardist)
"This band is just crazy... I don't watch many bands before I play my own gig but I couldn't take my eyes off the stage when they rocked the house. Thanks guys!"
- Casey Grillo (Kamelot Drummer)
