Band Members: King D, born DeWitt Poindexter Jr., grew up in Norristown, PA, a borough just outside of Philly. He was born to DeWitt and Loren Poindexter. Until 8th grade, he was schooled in the Norristown public education system. With a mother who worked full time as a social worker, DeWitt spent a lot of his time in his father's barbershop. Surrounded by an atmosphere of few positive role models, he was often exposed to the crime, drugs, and violence that plagued the small town. However, with the guidance of his father and mother, he managed to steer clear of trouble, for the most part..an accomplishment seeing as how a lot of his childhood friends are now selling drugs, in jail, or dead. He managed to escape that life in part through his interest in hip-hop. At age 13, DeWitt and his family moved to a quiet, suburban part of Reading, PA. He began high school at Exeter Township Senior High. In the fall of 2004, he enrolled at Shippensburg University. DeWitt was determined not to work a 9 to 5 the rest of his life post-graduation, so in addition to school he began to really hustle hard with his music.
In the summer of 2005, King D financed and recorded ..Checkmate the Mixtape.. made up of blazing hot rhymes put over top of popular industry beats. Unexpectedly, ..Checkmate.. made for a huge local hit record. After this success, King D hit the college scene and had a few of his tracks in rotation on Shippensburg and other college radio stations. Roughly 2,000 copies of ..Checkmate.. were sold throughout the tri-state area. It was around this time that he was introduced to Bobby G, a vet in the music industry. Bobby G recognized the talent in King D and was willing to work with him to create a promo package to send to record labels. In 2006 King D recorded the street album, ..A King..s Welcome.., in a matter of months. Instead of industry beats, he took it to the next level, putting his lyrics over original beats. Since its release in the summer of 2006, King D has sold almost 10,000 copies, which is an amazing feat for any underground artist. King D has also headlined a showcase in Reading, PA and performed along side many of the top artists in the city. One of his singles was in heavy rotation on Reading..s most popular radio show hosted by DJ Johnny V. Surely, we will all soon see the growth of this young, talented artist. The world will give him a king..s welcome, and his reign will be long and prosperous.
