Within the music industry, names and labels are often used to help the public easily identify with particular figures, groups and castes. In many ways, these names establish who we are as individuals and provide a reference as to how we are publicly perceived; making it easier to believe that if Andrew Burrowes circulated his resume to any major record label, an A&R’s initial instinct wouldn’t invoke an aspiring emcee. So as an “Artistâ€, Andrew Burrowes lives synonymously as R:MeccA (on more formal accounts) to ensure that he is generally perceived to be more than just an up and coming “Rapper starâ€.
He is no other than Rew Mec. Born in Orange and brought up in Newark, the always talented Jersey emcee gravitated to illustration and storytelling at a very early age. While ironically humbled by perfection, R:MeccA (21) finds pride within his music as he is continuously on his quest to unearth the displaced humanity in the rap music of today. Aside from other issues, the transition between “Hood†and the outside world is only one of the topics he feels his peers in the Hip-Hop genre fail to discuss. While both of his South American (Guyana) born parents raised him and his older sister in “the land of opportunitiesâ€, a culture based on solid principles and morally correct values still lingered in their US household. To the school kids, most of the customs were strange from the exterior; in some cases strange form the interior when mirrored against his childhood flashback of Newark. Rew Mec jokingly elaborates on his earlier years “…a lot of the girls said I was “different†or you’re “weirdâ€, while being at home I was just Drew.â€
“Realistically, it’s just the same now for me working a traditional 9 to 5…just that now, I guess you can say I’m hip to the [neighbor] hood…â€, Rew Mec admits sarcastically. Lyrically, Rew Mec almost seamlessly translates his WTF attitude yet reserved poise into swaggadocious tracks like “We’re Making Money†or “LIGHTS“, in which he calls out swagger jackers. “Vertigoâ€, another classic reminiscent of the native tongue movement, is an angst cry for peace of mind as a man, a father and a lover. Rew Mec’s sound displays his honed ability to take the concepts of the environment and make it his own while maintaining a commercial appeal through his open personality. Brave and daring, he exploits the truth in all of us; the truth that we’re at times too ashamed to admit. With an uncanny, unrestricted and unadulterated style, R:MeccA is quite possibly the most versed, “out the box†emcee to recently come from the underground. Listen out for the name; it’s one that I’m sure we all will be able to identify.
