Crabs are Scavengers

About Me

Crabs are Scavengers began in March 2006 as the unexpected byproduct of forced learned nursery rhymes. Mnemonic lessons aside, we were able to capitalize on these rhythmic patterns to create a sonic resonance yielding not to undue commonalities but further confronting our adolescent history of cataloging every aspect of human life pertinent to societal development of the most well-behaved citizens and exploiting these discoveries to maximize our learning capabilities. By layering one summer lesson upon another, Sean McDougle, Jeremy Melton, Chris Watson, and Jacob Ducote created a melodic pattern that could easily be recognized as its own, yet sit well in the minds of passive listeners and show-goers alike. This repulsive method resulted in two packaged releases; the seven-song Human Fashion and the ten-song album Apple Tree Thief, released hand-in-hand on March 24, 2007. Now we're playin' live and makin new jamz like flat bread and mangos with plans to record and drop this summer.

Sounds Like: !!!!!!

Knoxville's newest new kids, Crabs Are Scavengers , deliver a debut platter reminiscent of ancient times when the term "indie rock" implied that the music existed in a nebulous space somewhere beyond the mainstream and was, well, independent. Apple Tree Thief evokes the sounds of proto-indie acts that were only marginally successful in their day such as little-known SST stalwarts Slovenly , DC also-rans Edsel , and early '90s favorites Archers of Loaf . Interesting, because it's doubtful that the members of CAS, some of whom are still in high school, have had much exposure to the aforementioned groups. The 10 tracks on Apple Tree Thief reveal a band still experimenting with its sound. The experimentation is not the forced musical meanderings of prog, rather, it's just what a talented young group sounds like as they're stretching out and expanding their musical palate. Luckily, CAS has defied the odds: most of its sonic research has yielded promising results.Veering away from the prerequisite teenage distortion, CAS offers a clean, startling sound that is punctuated by the occasional jagged riff. The band works in a pop format, but there's something a little bit skewed about the delivery, which is endearing. And the lyrics focus on vague yet astute introspections that belie the band's young age. There's a lot brewing here, and it's not sundry forced angst, either." - John Sewell, Metro Pulse
