My mother married South African political exile Douglas Mohlabane while studying in Nairobi, Kenya. I attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School where I led a pre-teen peer support group. I also became involved in various groups and organizations that combated racism and sexism. It would be these extroverted activities that assisted I take a singing career. Upon high school graduation, I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where I studied music theory. I also began developing my songwriting skills during my post-secondary education.
