BIOGRAPHY
In a predominately male driven industry, Tasleema has quickly made her mark on the hip-hop scene. Self-described as a 19- year old Brooklyn girl with a unique sense of fashion style, she often spells her name with two 3s (TASL33MA). The 3s represent the three different qualities within each facet of her astrological sign the Gemini twins. One twin is young, gifted and black, and the other is focused, driven and certain.
Growing up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, Tasleema didn't always have the finer things in life. But she always had her music. She recalls being a young child and watching Michael Jackson & Whitney Houston on television and she knew that she wanted to be a performer. Even as a child at the age of 5 she remembers her grandmother playing calypso music in the background while she and her brothers danced around the house. As Tasleema got older, singing and rhyming with her siblings became a regular in her household. She recalls her brother beat boxing and using pots and spoons as instruments. At that time she would perform locally in her community for weddings, graduations, and other events. By the fifth grade she was writing her own songs, poems and raps and at age 15 she was performing in NYC bars and nightclubs.
Word soon spread of her lyrical talents and Tasleema soon began doing shows all over New York City. She was regularly on BETs 106 and Park, she competed in the 15 hottest female MCs competition, and placed first in the nationwide Ears Talent Showcase competition. By then, she was already being recognized by many of the heavy hitters in the business, from members of Def Jam University, to Wyclef Jeans personal exclamation of her metaphorical genius.
Although Tasleema has been compared to the likes of superstars such as Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah, her style is multifaceted and distinctive. She wants to be known for her talent. Without missing a beat, she sings, dances and raps. There is no other female her age who can compete with her versatility, and that is what sets her apart from all the rest.
"These days its rarely about the music, its about how you look first, and if you're female its even worse. Its like, how much of your clothes are you willing to take off in order to sell records and be on top? I don't want to be hot for the moment, I want my music to be soulful-like it was back in the day when Marvin Gaye was doing it. I'm not going to be the artist who follows trends, I'll be the one who follows my heart."
