Artist Statement
“Objects hang before the eyes of the imagination, continuously re-presenting ourselves to ourselves, and telling the story of our lives in ways which would be impossible otherwise” – S. Pearce
I am fascinated with our relationship with objects; how we reflect ourselves in them for reassurance and protection, escapism and discovery. Assuming the role of a fraudulent anthropologist, I combine small-scale metal work with found objects to create enigmatic artefacts which toy with our desire to believe in the fantastic. Juxtaposing fact and fiction and enclosing my work in perplexing environments encourages belief and invites the viewer’s imagination to wander. Using the authority of the museum and reliquary I present evidence which speaks of the uncanny, the absent and melancholy.
Old museums, Halloween, taxidermy, antique shops and junk stores make me very happy. I like the inadvertently creepy but I don't like horror. My music taste is all over the show but it almost exclusively consists of melancholic or angry music because I am an angry disillusioned young woman.
Me and my sister are actual real life owls masquerading as human beings. We live in a tree and if you sift through our droppings you may find the bones of tiny rodents. We collect effigies of ourselves because we are frightened of mirrors.
Small wine glasses make me really, really quite upset.
