About Me

..The music business changes constantly. But one thing is for sure: hip-hop from and by the streets will always succeed. Case in point is the powerful, street-based album from Jimmy Brinx, Philadelphia's next hip-hop star. The first release from Dr. Dre's former right-hand man Big Chuck, The Business returns hip-hop to the streets, as every song offers the grit and edge that makes the music so powerful. "I'm keeping my stuff exactly the way that I've been doing it," explains Brinx, a veteran of the Philadelphia rap scene. "I'm rapping for the streets. I'm from the streets and that's what I'm giving to the people." Already a hit in Philadelphia, "Run (Here Comes Jimmy)" serves as a chilling introduction to Brink's brutal sound. The gangsterfied "Click Clack" and the dramatic "Drama Family" also showcase Brinx's hard-hitting lyrics and bone-crushing beats. "That's the way I was raised, the way I grew up," he says. "It's part of the neighborhood that I grew up in in Southwest Philly." Brinx demonstrates that his reach is universal on "Pipe Down," a potent collaboration with the Game, who is from Compton. "I called him up on my own," Brinx says. "He came through, wrote it down on his two-way right then and there and he laced the verse. We're both from the streets, so I think it's a great connection." But life isn't always so smooth. On the haunting, "Mission" Brinx details how he has to struggle because of his challenging environment. "It explains how I'm trying to do the right thing, but how it is hard because every time I come out the front door, there's nothing but negativity going on," he says. "So it's really hard to do good." Brinx also faced a setback in 2003 when his father, with whom he was close, passed away. While recording his album in California, Brinx went to his hotel room and wrote "Dad," a touching homage to his father that highlights their relationship. "Rap really never talked good about a dad or really gave dads credit. There are some good dads out there, but every rap song I listen to says, 'Dad was never around.' My dad was around. We didn't have much, but he tried and he kept the house as good as he could." When his father passed away, Brinx was forced to fend for himself. On the upbeat "Get $" Brinx examines how crooked people in the music industry get rich off of the talent of their artists. "I was sitting in the studio with one of my friends and we were talking about the rap game and how a lot of people get pimped and they don't care," Brinx recalls. "They're happy with a watch and a chain. But artists need to start pimping the people that pimp them. They need us just as much as we need them. If they didn't have us, they wouldn't have what they've got. So I said, don't you want to get paid? The hook just came into my head as they beat was playing: 'We're going to pimp this game/Keep grinding, man/Get the same/Stack chips." Born and raised in Southwest Philadelphia, Brinx was drawn to hip-hop in the early 1990s by the Fu-Schnickens, a zany rap trio whose energetic rhymes inspired Brinx to pursue rhyming. His first shot at rhyming came when one of his friends left him a beat. After honing his rhyme skill and gaining confidence in his rapping ability, Brinx started entering talent shows in the Philadelphia area. But success wasn't instant. He lost his first talent show. The first-timer didn't know how to work the stage and it showed. After the show, his mom gave him some insight. "She said, 'You got up there and stood still. You didn't really move. You didn't give the crowd anything,'" Brinx recalls. Realizing his mother was right, Brinx went home, dedicating even more attention to his raps. But he caught a case and was sent to a school for troubled youth. While on the bus one day, Brinx was writing a song and felt that he had that song. Not wanting to lose focus, he ditched school and went home. His mom wasn't pleased, to say the least, and she sent Brinx to his room, which is exactly what Brinx wanted so he could finish his lyrics. Reenergized, Brinx entered another talent show. This time, he won and was offered a recording contract with a local label. Nothing came of that short-lived relationship, but it gave Brinx all the confidence he needed. While driving through Philadelphia one day, he saw members of the NAAM Brigade rapping on a street corner. Seizing the opportunity, he joined the crew and impressed them enough to earn an invitation into their extended rhyme family as well as linking up with Philly based Wake Music for guidance. When the Brigade's album failed to garner much excitement, Brinx entered another Philadelphia talent show. This time, he connected with Forster Bros Entertainment, who signed Brinx and took him to Los Angeles to start working on his debut album. During a recording session in California, Brinx impressed the head of Game's production company, D-Mack, who suggested that Big Chuck check out the up-and-coming rapper. Instantly blown away by Brinx's skills, Big Chuck jumped aboard the project and put him together with his Drama Family production team. Now, with The Business ready to hit the streets, Jimmy Brinx plans to make his mark on the music business. Get ready.
