Originally The Weird Studio Bunch. Then The Unpopulars. Formed during a bad trip on Worthing seafront. Alan had been in The University Smalls with Philip Bond, Ashley knew someone who had a bass, Matt W. knew how to wear a hat, the girl's liked Glyn and Matt E. actually knew how to play drums. They gigged sporadically from 1989 to 1992, peaking with a four date tour that started in the kitchen of the flat above Barry's Bathrooms shop, went on to the now-raised-to-the-ground Carioca Club, on to the Richmond in Brighton - where the audience bunched themselves in a cowering huddle at the exit end of the hall - and culminated in an all out, surreal audio assault at John Fat Beast's birthday party at the Tuffnell Park Dome, supporting the Australian Doors. The song Thatcher, included here, was recorded on the first date of that tour.
It was at some point, buried deep in the eighties-nineties, that Thee Unpopulars truly came to fruition. Somehow, with the aid of heroic doses of LSD, vast amounts of weak, fizzy beer and some picnicking, we had managed to crack the code. What problem the code we had cracked could solve was irrelevant, the fact remained that we had opened the door to some hideous, spiralling vortex of cool and crap, from then on to be known as the Cool-Crap Continuum (C.C.C.). Having travelled through the paradigm of the C.C.C. (really cool things looking like crap and ABSOLUTE CRAP looking pretty damn cool) several times, we reached a point in human culture that had never been plumbed before (mainly because nobody could be bothered).
We had arrived in a neutral sea of stuff. Culture surrounded us with all of its comforts and rewards but all we could see was a blizzard of molecules, a monstrous jelly of vibrating matter that simply didn't matter. It was then that we changed our name to BROWN for an afternoon and wrote the uplifting concept album Cotton On To The Tulips. It was then that we discovered our alter egos Mike, Dave, Ricky, Brian and Sarah. It was then that we came up with the immortal words, Stupid is as stupid does.
It was around then that we recorded the brainstorming definitive version of THATCHER. Suddenly we could do anything! We could turn milk into lemonade! We could give up our paper rounds and concentrate on our cleaning jobs! We could afford to buy real crisps. Music flowed like drips from a leaky faucet. We were horrific prolific. We were profound to astound. We were specific terrific and fun for your mum.
We're soooo gooooood
