About Me

DJ Linx was born Vincent Douglas Brown Junior in Nov 1972, in Oxford, to Jamaican parents. From very early in his life he had an ear for music and grew up around the sounds of artists like: The Jackson 5, K,C & The Sunshine Band, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Roy Ayres, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Tappa Zukie, Big Yout’, Burning Spear and many others. As a youth approaching his teenage years, his musical taste led him to the emerging sound of Electro-Funk (as it used to be known), which evolved into what became Hip-Hop. As a teenager in the mid-late 80’s, artists like Public Enemy, Marley Marl, MC Shan, BDP, Big Daddy Kane and Roxanne Shanté were to have a major influence in determining the style of Hip-Hop he would appreciate. At the same time, he was also privy to the music selection of Oxfords then premier reggae sound system ‘Yard Force’ of which his uncle ‘Colonel Stupie’ was a founding member. At the age of 14, young Linx was bought a stereo system which was an integrated twin tape deck, tuner and turntable. It was on this humble unit that Linx was to learn the skills of scratching, mixing, sampling, looping etc. He was to link up with fellow vinyl junkies ‘The Soul Agent’ who specialized in Rare Groove and Soul, and Dj Pedro who bought Hip-Hop, Funk and House. The three teamed up to form the ‘Vibez Kru’. The Kru would record mix-tapes at Dj Pedro’s house, and other friends eventually joined adding their selections of music to the pool. Those other members included; Technikal, Fly, Spee (Peanut) and G-Wiz. As a Sound they came at the end of the era of the other sounds of their peers, such as; Groovemasters, Funk Deluxe and Underground Movement. In 1989 they were to play at a house party in Marston Oxford (in Peanuts house!) and in 1990 they played at the Cape of Good Hope, ramming the venue to capacity. The Vibez Kru went on to play at various venues around Oxford. They played once in Chesham alongside Wycombe MC ‘MCM’ from the group Caveman. Due to Linx’s love for Hip-Hop which was also appreciated by Technikal, Fly and his younger cousin MC Onslaught, the four went on to create Oxfords premier Hip-Hop Sound ‘Statiks’. Two other local MC's later joined the Statiks fold: Tiamat and Stress.Between 1992 – 1993, Linx was recruited by local reggae sound system – Classic Harmony. He was to transform the presentation of their music by incorporating his mixing ability, turning Classic Harmony into Oxfords Premier ‘juggling’ Sound. As a member of Classic Harmony Sound, Linx was to play at numerous venues throughout the UK, alongside other sounds and djs including David Rodigan.Whilst dj-ing for Classic Harmony, Linx teamed up with another local ghetto celeb dj – Danny ‘MSD’ Whittaker. They produced a few mixtapes and hip-hop productions around 1994-6. Following the break up of Classic Harmony and the birth of his second son in 1997, Linx decided to step back from the scene, only buying the odd album here and there. In 1999 Linx was to occasionally assist local Dj/MC and presenter of ‘The Boom Box’ Kid Fury on Oxfords ‘Oxygen 107.9fm’ as well as presenting a live mix and Dj-ing with MC’s from the hip-hop sound Statiks. Work commitments soon meant that Linx was no longer able to continue working on Oxygen fm. Then in 2006 an opportunity arose to take part in a local community project which led to the setting up of OX4 Radio. The station was granted an RSL to broadcast for a week in October of 2006. Initially Linx was asked to appear as a guest dj on a Sunday show with presenter MJ, playing Soul, Rare Groove, and Hip-Hop. Linx chose to share his set with Vibez dj The Soul Agent, so together they played an awesome Rare Groove and Old Skool Hip-Hop set. They were then asked by MJ to co-present a show which would feature in a month long RSL which allowed them to show more of their range. Two shows a week were scheduled, a Friday evening show (playing mainly Hip-Hop, Ragga and R&B) and a Sunday afternoon show (playing Rare Groove and Reggae).Currently Linx can be heard on OX4 Radio on Friday nights between 9-11pm GMT, playing a more eclectic selection, but keeping it funky. To listen to the OX4 Radio stream you can copy and paste this web address into your browser: http://www.ox4fm.net/ox4fm.m3u
