About Me

If you have to ask, you'll probably find out. "Favors Between Friends," from "Stories of Mr. Nobody" by Bertolt Brecht: "As an example of the right way to do a friend a favor, Mr. N. told the following story. Three young people came to an old Arab and said to him, "Our father has died. He left us seventeen camels and arranged it in his will that the oldest son should get half, the second a third, and the youngest a ninth of the camels. Now, we can't agree about the distribution; you take over the decision!" The Arab thought it over and said: "The way I see it, to be able to share it out well, you're a camel short. I myself only have one camel, but it's at your disposal. Take it and share them, and bring me only what's left over." They thanked him for this friendly turn, took the camel along and shared out the eighteen camels in such a way that the oldest got half - that's nine, the second got a third - that's six, and the youngest got a ninth - that's two camels. To their astonishment, when they had each led their camels to the side, one camel was left over. This they brought back to their old friend, expressing their gratitude anew. Mr. K. rightly called this a friendly turn, because it did not demand any special sacrifices."
