“I’m not afraid of taking the risk of bringing back the true sound of R&B … that classic sound that got us here. It seems that today’s generation has left that sound in the past…it still lives within us, and I’m ready to bring it back.â€These are the words of 23 year old, O’Keith Stewart, a super-talented singer/songwriter from the City of Compton. Blessed with God-given talent, O’Keith simply states he’s a regular guy, who loves music…but he’s more than that. From first glance he’ll catch your eye but once his voice is heard, his smooth soulful sound will serenade your mental like the R&B greats of yesteryear...It was only ten years ago that Compton was most recognized for NWA’s, “Straight Outta Compton†a hardcore rap ballad that sold over 3 million records. No one would have ever thought that anything other than a hardcore rapper could rise from the shadows of Compton. Until now…Coming straight out of Compton…a young talented singer/songwriter named O’Keith Stewart is easily recognized as, “Compton’s Most Wantedâ€. The first R&B artist from the city, O’Keith’s background is rooted in Gospel music with the sounds of Kim Burrell & Karen Clark setting the undertone & late R&B greats like Sam Cooke & Donny Hathaway being the essence of the young songwriters inspiration.“I’m not afraid to take the risk of bringing back the true sound of R&B… that classic sound that got us here.â€Not only does he take inspiration from his musical mentors, he also takes his experiences with people, his family & daily life in Compton as great inspiration for most of his songwriting.“I come from a musical family…we’re rooted in Gospel, all my aunts & grandmothers sing, my father plays Bass, and my brother produces… but my mother was the most essential figure, she always was the one pushing me the hardest…but at the same time always telling me never to give up on my dreams… essentially she’s the one who’s helped me develop my hard work ethic in the studio.â€By age 5, O’Keith was coming up with renditions of his own songs and contributing to songs that his father would record in the neighborhood studio. Throughout his childhood days, singing soon became much more than hobby of his youth, but a way of life that he talked about with his family and childhood friends. While most children were running down the sidewalk playing games, O’Keith was conducting music shows on the bleachers of his Junior High school and meeting with his friends about the possibilities of putting together a group. The thoughts of forming a group quickly led to the writing and production side of music. If he wasn’t playing basketball, much of his after school time was devoted to writing songs & strengthening his voice.By the time he got to high school, O’Keith had joined a group called Day One, in which he was given the opportunity to produce and write the majority of their songs. The experience of writing, producing, and going through vocal training with Day One helped to further prime the young artist for the ventures that he would be taking to bolster his music career. Although Day One faded away and members decided to go there own separate ways, the experience was just what O’Keith needed to push him to the next level.Shortly after the split, he started to collaborate with other artists and build his reputation as a true vocalist, songwriter, and producer. With a style and maturity for music that exceeds his age; many local artists began to clamor for the opportunity to see just what this new talent had to offer and where it came from.Rooted in a city of working families that rely on love, faith, and togetherness to overcome barriers, its the heart of the misunderstood city where he grew up and where his family lived that has given O’Keith a peculiar rift of emotion, and stylistically a voice that will echo throughout the halls of R&B fame.“When it comes to my music & songwriting, everything is true to life…everything is from experience, things that I’ve been through... I bleed out these lyrics from deep within and at the end of the day I want people to feel my soul, feel my story and understand that my music is real…not synthesized, pieced together or cleverly produced but truly music from, and for the soul…
