When We Were You formed in mid-2005 with members Josh Kane(Guitar), Steven Buckton(Drums), Andrew Flamank(Guitar), Alex Grundy(Bass) and Matt Barber(Ex-Vocals). In a town where pub-rock cover bands ruled with a Sweet Home Alabama fist, the band united in a bid to create original music from a fresh, intense and brutal perspective. Despite a line-up change in mid-2006 which saw the departure of Matt and the subsequent arrival of Sam Menzies (Vocals), the band quickly consolidated and continued to create a sound built on a progressive array of melodic guitar screams with blistering riffery, soaring vocal melodies accompanying savage growls with intricate, aggressive drum beats. The current line-up has been together nearly two years and first performed with a support slot for I Killed The Prom Queen and has since shared the stage with Gyroscope, The Getaway Plan, A Secret Death, The Wrath, Loe, Wish for Wings, Coma Lies, Western Decay, Rex Banner, Art Vandelay, Ryu Vs. Ken, Between the Devil and the Deep, Japunga, Last Call and other renowned hardcore/punk/metal acts.
But in a world of adjectives and clichés, how do the boys cope? In the band's spare time Sam likes to work on his dance beats, recording and mixing, Josh is locked in a room with a guitar and a strobe light and only let out for shows, Andrew lifts weights and listens to metal, Steven works on cultivating his beard and being a dad and Alex collects t-shirts with dinosaurs on them. The guys are currently working on an EP to follow up their Demo released in 2006 and figuring out ways to stay on the road whilst keeping employers happy. Highlights for the band include sharing the stage with great friends Ryu vs Ken at their Brisbane launch, travelling between Rockhampton and Bundaberg and playing with Loe and Last call as well as opening for I Killed The Prom Queen. For the future the guys hope to construct more material and finish recording their EP which has been stewing in the proverbial pot for as long as anyone can remember, debate the common trend of pirate pants and their function in contemporary music, continue their travels around the state and south of the border as well as gaining some semblance of maturity.
