Learning folk and pop songs at family parties, and guitar and mandolin from big brother Bill, as well as rudiments of music on a Rosedale electric reed organ, I made a start on my musical career in the same homespun, ragged and rowdy style that I still have to this day.As a teenager, I played with two pals Michael Grant and Andrew Reid in a band called Bannawg, occasionally with papa bear Frank Kennedy. Then, a good deal of duetting with Andrew on some real lo-fi, lashed-up recordings. Then, with Andrew and Ernie Capaldi, Carlo Rubino in the Gasworks Gang, firstly with Jamie Bruce on keyboards then Kevin Milne. Then other things took over, but in 2004 I hooked up with Linda Kosciewicz to do jazz, bossa-nova and pop duets, and at the same time started jamming with Andy Tucker and the gang from what became the Dead Beat Club; Shona Brodie and Dave Bell, and later with Gogs Robertson and Clive Backler. Last year guested for The Kays Lavelle, Spangleshifters, Richie Gallagher and Kat Healy.

New Tune - Water Rat

Not sure I have "ownership" of this, as I don't play on it, but this cracking little tune was recorded by Andrew Reid on acoustic and Michael Grant on electric guitar, around the time we were all play...

Rubber Records! - I really don't know how I missed Rubber Records . . .

I don't know how many people I've already bored with this mild obsession, but I do know that I missed a major influence off that ridiculously long list on my page. Rubber Records, provider of quality ...

Spyro Gyra! - how could I . . .? Well, perhaps that's easier to explain . . .

I listened to a greatest hits thing in my twenties and really liked it - yes, I know, I know, trite poppy pretentious hotel lobby muzack, but undeniably an influence all the same. So there I was passi...

Lauryn Hill - how the blazes could I have forgotten Lauryn Hill?

This is exactly why I never answer when someone asks "What sort of music do you like?" - ok, so I'm not a big rap fan and I have only a passing interest in what's become known as R&B (I thought Jo...

Robin Trower - how could I forget Robin Trower?

Well, I wasn't really around in the sixties when Procul Harum had 15 minutes or so of fame - funny how people remember a slushy rip-off of a Bach tune, albeit with superb vocals, and forget some reall...

Flaming Lips! How could I have forgotten the Flaming Lips?

It has occurred to me over the last few weeks that my list of influences is ridiculous, laughable, tedious and overblown BUT I do have a lot of influences AND that's what they are AND I get legends li...
