About Me

THE VISION
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was will and form. The Word was: Manifest! The Word was: Shokazoba! Yeah, those who have ears let them hear the polyrhythmic blend of strings and skins, the soulful wail of brass and keys, the oratory evocation of a world breaking down and breaking through. Witness Shokazoba, a magical explosion of energy and ideas, awakening the unconscious urge to transcend, triggering that stir of recognition, that genetic identification with our primordial past and the serpent spirit’s whisper: “Ye shall be as gods.”
Shokazoba’s live performances are a cosmic conduit to an extra-dimensional spacetime in which ancient and future collide to create a double-helix vibration of rhythm and wisdom, where fellow groovers and seekers weave and twirl through infinity, from our roots in antiquity to our flowering into novelty.
Culled from a community of culture surfers scouting the next wave, Shokazoba is a collective of visionary performers whose original compositions supply the soundtrack to the imminent Great Awakening. In this they conjure the Underground Spiritual Game pioneered by Afrobeat godfather, Fela Kuti-- musician, politician, shaman—who, in his politically-charged fusion of James Brown, John Coltrane and Mother Africa, crafted a style of music so hypnotic, so elemental that those who hear it cannot help but lose themselves in the winding waves of sound. To hear Shokazoba is to be in the presence of all that the ALL has in store for * a generation facing obliteration or elevation to an ascended society of supra-sensuality in sound.
We are dedicated to bringing a message of peace, hope and awareness to the masses through playing our Afrobeat Funk.
THE MUSICIANS This mix of progressive punk psychedelic afro-funk draws from some of Western Massachusetts’ premiere musicians currently or formerly involved with such projects as The 5th Pocket, Somebody’s Closet, Baba Olatunji, World Beat Ensemble, Syzygy, The Primate Fiasco, Gaiah Roots.
The band’s current incarnation garnered the Valley Advocate “Best of 2007” award for World Music and "Best of 2008" award for Funk. 2008 saw the release of their debut recording, “Think Like a Hammer."
As this year closes, Shokazoba is working very hard on a new release tentatively titled, "Social Constructs." Check back often right here for samples as the progress unfolds.
