STUFF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN NICE ENOUGH TO WRITE OR SAY ABOUT US:
-- Beneath the neon-green glow of two bright stageside beer signs, Chapel Hill five-piece In the Year of the Pig sounded like our incredible hulks, just faster and brighter and less vulnerable. The band's metallic Motorik menace slapped the room in the ears, like spiky exclamation points stabbing the gaps open for Earth, now a torpid, monolithic, blues-based, heavy-bottomed band with a focus and mettle as elegant as it is arid. -- Grayson Currin, The Independent
-- As a trio, Chapel Hill's In the Year of the Pig was a pocket of energy rattling loose onstage in unexpected vectors. Mic stands collapsed. Pedals slid. Sweat poured. It was heavy to a point, but mostly it was loud, sharp and entertaining. Sometime in 2007, the Pigs grew to five, doubling the drums with longtime Chapel Hill musician Dave Cantwell and the bass with Lincoln Sward. Now, they make Motorik rhythms for an anti-military-industrial complex, bludgeoning, aggressive and unstoppable. One of the most damaging bands at work. -- Grayson Currin, Shuffle Magazine, April 2008
-- Mimetic maybe of the sound of your brain sucked from the cranium with a big bendy straw, In the Year of the Pig are a skull-trephining mindfuck of the first degree, fueled by acid-wash freakouts and buzzing, distorted tsunamis designed to level your consciousness. Songs such as "I Dreamt I Didn't Hate You But Then I Woke Up" lope like the Melvins on Quaaludes, interspersed with moments of lucid hardcore. Other songs are similar (read: noisy) yet completely different (read: there are a lot of ways to skin a god damned cat).--Chris Parker, The Independent Weekly, June 27, 2007
-- In The Year of The Pig make fuzzwashed gtr-bass-drums freakout wall-of-everything music, with little animal hats...--Ross Grady, TriangleRock.com
-- Apparently if you take a random survey of 4 different music lovers whose authority you trust, they'll light up in the face, their posture will improve & they'll get real bouncy & breathy as they tumble into an unexpected and bizarrely passionate detailing of their complex but unquestionable love for this band. it usually goes a little something like this: "...you think it's gonna be a total trainwreck...cute animal hats...insane...totally fucking brilliant!!!" it's hard to suppress intrigue when you've got that type of across-the-board enthusiasm for a group of people who seem convinced they're forest animals.--Aimee Argote, des_ark
-- You guys are the worst pieces of shit I've ever seen.--Our numero 1 fan from a show at Reservoir in Chapel Hill, to an amused audience via Bear's microphone.
-- The Sunburned Hand with the horse head says, "Thanks to [In the] Year of the Pig. That shit was fucked up."
It's always about the falling apart!--Bear, to Fox and Panda before practice, noting the commonality in most listeners' reactions to the chaotic (read as "intense" or "sloppy" depending on your personal aesthetic) nature of ITYOTP's live performance.
Above video is from a May 14, 2008 show at the Nightlight with Caltrop and Thrones. Very nice of Karen Mann to come and take video.
