About Me

How do you know who you are? Is it your differences from other people? Can you find it in what books you like, what music you listen to? Does each person have some unchangeable essence, or our our identities determined solely by context? How do you strip away the false and discover the real, and then how do you live as who you truly are? It's so easy to be who you think other people or society wants you be. To slip into a acceptable personality. How do you believe that you are worth discovering and being who you really are? Most importantly, how do you come to accept yourself and know that you are truly valuable as you really are?

Music:

When I listen to the radio I listen to Jazz, Classical, Folk/World pop, and occasionally the honky-tonk country hour on KEXP. I also enjoy All Things Considered and Fresh Aire with Terri Gross on NPR, and of course "A Prairie Home Companion", when I remember that it's on. I used to catch "Car Talk" but sadly I am not usually up by 10am on Saturday.

Movies:

I like a lot of different things, but mostly undepressing dramas, non-romantic comedies, semi-comedic romances, adventures (not to be confused with action, though I do like Indiana Jones), anything by Hayao Miyazaki, and whatever decent stuff is playing on TV. Recently I have watched The Karate Kid on AMC. It's a great movie despite some cliché 80's moments and the fact that somehow, after spending at least 30 years in America, Mr. Miyagi still hasn't learned the word "the". Which is ridiculous.

Television:

create free polls | comment on thisI'm constantly having to rewrite this part, as my viewing habits change. But currently I'm watching the reality contest shows Project Runway and Top Design. I was watching America's Best Dance Crew, which I really enjoyed, though I was pretty disappointed that Fanny Pack didn't make it to the finals instead of So Real Cru--I thought FP was much more creative.I also like to watch South Park, The Daily Show, Colbert Report, The Late Late show with Craig Ferguson, Kim Possible, The Emperor's New School (yes, I'm aware that these are Disney Cartoons), um.... also Dr. Who, both old and new, and that's about it for now. I generally flip channels between different things if I'm not watching something specific, which is a bit unnecessary to say, but...

I've also been watching British comedy on You Tube, specifically Wooster & Jeeves with Stephan Fry and Hugh Laurie (he plays House on TV), and their sketch comedy show A Bit of Fry and Laurie. It's hilarious.

I guess that's probably enough for now, eh? If I write more you all with think I do nothing but watch TV all day.

Books:

The most recent books I've enjoyed are The Eyre Affair, Aman (the first person account of a girl growing up in Somali), and Wicked .You can check out my favorite (and not so favorite) reads at GoodReads.com , which is a great site that I encourage everyone to join :)

Heroes:

Sadly, I'm a bit too jaded to have real heroes in the sense that there is anyone who I worship and think is everything I want to be. (Perhaps jaded isn't the word--disillusioned works better.) But there are characters and people I can't help but like and admire. They are the people who are truly kind and loving to others; who have their own sense of self though they might struggle to live it out; and who do what is right whether or not they'll with the "good fight".
