"924 Gilman St."A feature documentary (running time: 86 mins.)In the documentary 924 Gilman St, first time filmmaker Jack Curran takes an in-depth look at the Berkeley, California, punk venue 924 Gilman St. The Club is an all-ages, non-profit, collectively organized music and performance venue, now embarking on its 20th year of existence. It is inarguably the most celebrated venue of it's kind, and its long running ability to provide a space for music, as well as fostering a diverse punk community has earned international attention and praise. The documentary has no official narrator, so the history, inner workings, and impact of the club are revealed through interviews with the workers and musicians that have supported the club over the years. Some of those interviewed include: Jello Biafra, Ian MacKaye, Lars Frederickson, Matt Freeman, Dave Scattered and Sweettooth. The lack of narrator posed a challenge to Jack in the early stages, but the story so clearly belongs to those who have worked in and with the club that a narrator was hardly missed. Performances by Operation Ivy, Pansy Division, Fleshies, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Against Me, Jason Webley, Panty Raid, Screeching Weasel, Pinhead Gunpowder, Dominatrix (Brazil), D.S.B. (Japan), and Atom and His Package provide a small sense of what it is like to attend a show at Gilman Street, where the band, audience and staff are all equally important to the success of the show.924 Gilman St. allows the audience to experience the way in which a small punk club has deeply impacted the lives of those involved in it, and surpassed expectation again and again. This film was made in hope that people in other towns, across the U.S. and the world would be inspired and empowered to start a club of their own.Presently, the documentary is being entered in film festivals across the US and will be released on DVD July 29th 2008.
