www.klconrad.comSince moving halfway across the world to Stockholm my art has changed, partly because of the new culture that I have found myself in. My painting style began incorporating abstracted Stockholm landscapes, which for me articulate the confusion and frustration that I experienced while confronting a new culture and language. My work then took a dramatic shift to reveal a more sculptural side.
The tradition in painting is to stretch canvas over a flat wooden frame, the result being a flat piece of art. What I am doing is expanding the two-dimensional concept of painting. My newest works are structural and incorporate curves so that the painting, once hung, undulates away from the wall.
These abstract works free me from telling the viewer what to think. Using the titles as a point of departure, the viewer is left to unravel her or his own meaning. My use of multiple panels illustrates connections or "disconnects" between people, or a person and their environment.
My theme as of the past year or so has been water: How it flows, cleanses, reclaims, and destroys. My new pieces are a melding of both sculpture and painting. The forms emulate waves or ripples, signaling that our actions have their repercussions.
*Note on technique
My more recent paintings don't only look three-dimensional, they are. I use a furniture making technique called "laminating", which allows me to create canvases with flowing curves. Applying this technique to painting is an invention of my own.
