At the tender age of thirteen, Fonna already has a keen sense of where she wants to go. “I want to go all the way to the top,†she says. “While she is completely focused when it comes to her music she also “likes to go roller blading and doing the mall thing with my girlfriends.†Fonna is an enormously talented singer whose vocal dexterity extends beyond her 13 years. As her eponymous Hook Shop Records debut CD shows, Fonna has the voice to influence audiences of today and for many years to come.Produced by Mikey Bassie (Britney Spears, Joey McIntyre, Andru Donalds and Bob Andy), the new CD reflects the world as seen through the eyes of a fun-loving teen. The CD covers young love, social consciousness, sisterhood and just plain teenage fun.
“Peekaboo (I’m talkin’ 2 U),†the first single, is an exciting and fun track that explores the nuances of friendship through the eyes of a teenager. “When the chips are down, I’ll be around if you call my name,†she says, quoting a line from the single. “You always have to be there for your friends, that’s what my mom always says and it is something I believe and my songs reflect that in some way.†The track is a big hit on Fonna’s mySpace and she is looking forward to taking it on the road where she can share a personal rapport with her friends and fans.Fonna has performed at events in Omaha, Florida and New York, providing audiences with brilliant glimpses of her debut CD; she is looking forward to this summer she will share her talents with more of her fans in live concerts. Unlike many of today’s teen artists Fonna strives to take her vocals to new heights on each track and delivers on each attempt.Funky tracks like “Limousineâ€, “Hit Me Back†and “Bop (Don’t Stop)â€explore some of the standard fare of middle school and day to day life, unearthing musical and lyrical gems in the process. In "Hit Me Back," Fonna layers her own elaborate harmonies over a tight track, while her soulful cover of Desmond Dekker’s “Israelites,†displays the true versatility of her voice.Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Fonna began singing at age 4 -- no surprise, as hergrandfather was a jazz singer who sang to her always and who was very active on the church choir. “When I was four I went to the mall with my mom and I was singing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer†and a lady came up to my mom and said your daughter can really sing. That’s when my mom first realized that I could really sing.â€Fonna's big break came when songwriter/ producer Mikey Bassie heard Fonna sing over the phone. She was all of eight-years old. "The next day," recalls Fonna, "Mikey called us andsaid “I would love to write and produce an album for you.†It would be two years later that Fonna and family were flown to Hook Shop Studios in Florida, where she started recording around her school schedule. Fonna was later signed to Hook Shop Records where she completed her debut CD earlier this year."It's been such a fun and wild experience," laughs Fonna. "It's so much fun but also a lot of work at the same time.â€In the months preceding the CD release, Fonna has been setting the stage. “Peekaboo (I’m Talkin’ 2 U)†and “Ain’t Too Young to Know have been getting airplay in New York, California and the mid-west. Fonna is getting ready to do a new video for “Peekaboo†and one for “Ain’t Too Young to Know.â€â€œSome of my main influences are Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Ciara and my grandfather. I hope my grandfather is watching and that he is real proud of what I’ve done with the talent that he helped to develop.â€With so much happening in her life and career, it's fair to ask how the 13-year-oldhandles it all. Her answer is this: "I've got awesome people around me," says Fonna."People always tell me to keep my head on straight. Well, I have my family to help medo that. I want to use my music to help make the world a better place.“My name is FONNA and music is my life.â€
