Unkut Recordings

>Australian based and established in 1997 with the release of Trems 'Sheer Talent' 12", Unkut Recordings was the brainchild of Trem and Rob Nat (Robbie Ettelson of Unkut.com fame). Formed predominantly as a way to put out their own product at a time when no semi large label in this part of the world would look sideways at a Hip Hop release, and other small independent labels were just lifting off in their own infant stages, they put their money where their mouth was and adapted the do-for-self strategy.The idea was simple, build a label that represents a level of the highest quality and dedication to music, rather than a means to cash in on Hip Hops ever-growing fan base. Straight up dope Hip Hop was the soul focus and has since been achieved with Unkut spawning a string of classic releases over the past 10 years including the labels first full length- Lyrical Commission's 'Stage Is Set' (2002) and their 'Murderous Metaphors' E.P (2005), along with Brad Struts landmark sophomore LP-'Legend : Official' (2007). With a string of product due to drop in the near future including the long awaited solo L.P from Trem, and the much anticipated L.C DVD the label has stuck to its "quality over quantity" motto and proven its focus is to manufacture classic releases rather than contribute to flooding the scene with half arsed product.After initially distributing the early releases hand to hand and foot to shop, the label set about establishing a more efficient distribution network and by late 2003, Unkut product had squeezed its way into larger scale music stores. This part of the process was something they continued to look at a little more extensively and by 2005, eventually struck a deal with Shogun Distribution and handed the existing in print catalogue and all future Unkut product to the Distro giants. This now allowed the product to be accessible from pretty much any national music outlet including local indy stores to large chains incl. JB Hi-Fi and HMV. It also helped to expand Unkut Internationally shipping the product to varying record stores, online Hip Hop shops throughout the U.K & States as well as itunes and the like.The label also branched off with a Recording Studio for over two years from 2005-2008 giving locals and aspiring Hip Hop artists a place to record and mix projects ranging from first demo’s to entire releases. Giving newcomers and the uninitiated a glimpse of the recording/ mixing process and an affordable studio with a noted Hip Hop head at the helm of their recordings as Trem controlled the boards.
