Getting ready for a tour in June starting with New Orleans!BORN IN VIRGINIA, Lisa Marshall has been playing and singing with bands since she was 19 years old. Her introduction to music came from her parents who owned a huge collection of albums of just about any genre that existed during the early 70's. Some of her favorite memories are the hot muggy summer days of Virginia Beach. Her family lived on the Chesepeake Bay. She and her sister would jump in the warm Bay waters to try and cool off but only lasted long enough to keep the thick clumps of jellyfish from closing in.
"Dad would usually be flipping one of his favorites, burgers, in a frying pan with music blasting out of the stereo. Our carpet had sand in it so it was liking walking on a giant bean bag, which of course we had too. Our little neighborhood seemed very hippie to me, and the music in our house ranged from 60's psycedelic to jam bands to Mom's favorite, Motown. But one of my repeat songs was "Cowgirl in the Sand" Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - the 4 Way Street album. What a great time to be discovering music!"
After her parents split disco and funk were coming out strong. Her Mother would often send Lisa into the record store to fetch a Rick James or Wild Cherry 45 record. "She would have us play whatever 45 we recently purchased over and over. However, to this day my Mother still thinks Elvis was the sexiest, greatest performer/ vocalist of all time"At 21 she moved to California, where she co-founded Peculiar Boogie (Rebekah Coltman-lead guitar/co-founder, Susan Joyner- keys, sax, guitar/co-founder, John Knecht-drums,percussion,djembe, Clinton Calton-bass), which she was the lead voclist for 10 years, Opening for artists such as Koko Taylor, Robben Ford, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, with whom she also performed. "Singing with them was exhilarating and intimidating and the same time. When we opened for them for the 30 yr. anniversary of their performance at Monterey Park, Becky got to play guitar and I sang back-up on "I Need a Man".
Until '05, Marshall has been playing bass and singing lead in her Seattle-based band.

"Lisa Marshall's first solo album carries a heavy debt to the Motown era; backup singers croon to Marshall's soaring vocals, while tambourines and bass riffs stroke and jingle each piece to perfection. Like late Tina Turner, the swinging melody dips and soars with lyrics about defeat and triumph, and defeat again. It's the contrast of it all that gets you. Like the groove that underpins lines like "What makes the heart break so slow?" Or Marshall's surprising compositions; her voice belts and soars through the building lyrics then dips to a restrained contralto for climatic lines, like "I am so, so, so,...lost," which gets more deliciously guttural with each "so." Hints of reverb in the production space add a subtle, creepy effect to the gospel tunes. What really makes it is that when she sings a song..you cant imagine it being sung any other way.
