About Me

Kevin, "Kay Costin'" Coston was born January 11,1984 in Virginia Beach, VA - a melting pot of such of many musical influences. Kevin (referred to for the rest of this article as Kay Cost) was born to Vincent Coston; a retired Vietnam Vet who had practical views on civil rights and the government's ways of handling domestic affairs, and Eula Coston a teacher's asst. who grew up in Princess Anne County; a southern hotbed of racism where the first "indentured servants" from Africa were brought to America. Non the less Kay Cost grew up with real ideas of how politics in America worked at a very young age. Kay Cost's father was also an art major from Norfolk State University who was also co-founder of NSU's alumni band. Needless to say, music was a major backdrop in the Coston family household. Kevin and his sister Alicia excelled in different departments of the arts with Alicia excelling in English studies and Kay Cost quickly taking to music. Cost's first instrument of choice was the piano. By age 5, Cost was playing church hymns by ear and banging out elementary versions of songs he had heard on the radio and on the family hi-fi stereo. Skip ahead a few years to where Cost was actually old enough to enter his elementary school choir and received honors to participate in all city (where he was the only male figure from his school). After which, when young Cost entered middle and high school he excelled on many brass instruments including the trumpet, trombone, and euphonium. Although Cost had a great love for the technical compositions he would soon play, he had an all time love for hip-hop; a form of music he got his young mind wrapped around in the 2nd grade in 1992 when first hearing the sonic quality of Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". Cost:"Man I remember being so young and hearin dem beats.....and the cussin' hahah man it was a new experience". Soon after excelling to the top in his positions in the band as horn line captain, in the Jazz Ensemble, and in the nationally ranked Symphonic Band for 4 years - Cost blended his knowledge of music theory with his love of hip hop and took off running. With only a DJX to his name, Cost began to construct primitive beats in his bedroom under the moniker Nemesis. Cost was the lunch time producer at the same high school that produced up and coming Timbaland protege, Nate "Danja Handz" Hills, and Gavin "Geology" Harrasty, an up and coming producer from across town. Cost: "Man when I met G it was like an instant click he loved makin tracks and so did I". Cost soon began work with Hot Janks Entertainment, a company formally affiliated with Beat Club Records through Paul Brinson, Terrence Hackley, and Larry Lyons (best friend of Timbaland). Cost would learn the hard way that a dream doesn't come over night after Larry Lyons of H.J.E. signed Danja Handz and soon had him working with Timbalnd Cost: " Man it was devastating cause here I am a college dropout planning to do it up and BAM Nate got skipped up a step ....I couldn't complain though cause the experience I got was incredible submitting beats to Timbaland, although it was through a third party - I still learned a lot". Now 22 years of age and armed w/ a Motif 6, Pro Tools 7.0, Technic 1210s, an arsenal of vinyl, and an undying love for music; Cost has learned enough to prep him mentally and physically for the music industry. Cost: "Aint no progress without struggle. Fredrick Douglass said it best....you can't come at this game with one angle you gotta be a renaissance man prepared to excel in every talent you possess. At the end of the day I wanna do every style of music I can because I am a musician and musicians don't discriminate their tastes. Just because I'm black don't mean I won't do a rock track or alternative. That's the misconception these days, people are scared to be themselves. That is exactly what Kay Cost intends to do: change one soul one at a time by ministering to people through the universal language .....MUSIC. Myspace Contact Tables
