“THE BROKEN STRING :
Voices & Shadows
In Modern Memphis Musicâ€ABOUT THE FILMIn December of 2005, Memphis musician Robert Allen Parker and videographer Nan Hackman began filming live footage and interviews with original Memphis musicians and related individuals for a documentary on the modern Memphis music scene. The film will be covering a generous sample of original Memphis music within the last 15 years. In this case, besides filming footage of his own, Parker has been collecting footage from many outside sources to build a “video archive†which the film will draw from.
The subject matter of this film deals with the creative fire and maverick spirit of modern Memphis musicians. It is no secret that Memphis is a special mecca for music. Just the mention of the word “Memphis†brings many things to mind: Elvis, BB King,
the blues, Sun Records, Stax Records, Big Star, Al Green, Beale Street, Graceland, and
the list goes on and on. However, the birthplace of rock’n’roll and the home of the blues is more than a tourist attraction. The music NEVER stopped.
Although the music business and record labels left Memphis alone in the late 70’s, the city has continuously grown and developed as an independent community of earthshaking musicians. Rock’n’roll lives here. As many musicians will tell you: “We like to do things our OWN way.†Though every artist is doing their own thing, they each seem to share a common ground and philosophy forming a “broken string.â€
Today’s music scene in Memphis is more vibrant than ever. You will find live music any night of the week. You will discover an eclectic stratosphere of original music.
As far as the original music community is concerned, you will find that Memphis is truly
a small town where musicians play in several projects at once and frequent the same clubs. Also, in many cases, there is strong sense of heritage that musicians are happy to carry on in their OWN way, of course.
The experiences of being a modern day Memphis musician will be conducted by a broken string of voices including Jack Yarber (THE OBLIVIANS), Hope Clayburn,
The Hometown Nobodies, Ben Nichols (LUCERO), Scott Bomar (IMPALA), Dave Shouse (THE GRIFTERS), Valerie June, ON A DEAD MACHINE, THE WARBLE,
Luther Dickinson (NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS), Tav Falco, Jim Dickinson,
Alicja Trout (RIVER CITY TANLINES), Eric Friedl (GONER RECORDS), Sherman Willmott (SHANGRI LA RECORDS), Brad Postlethwaite (SNOWGLOBE), Monsieur Jeffrey Evans, Ross Johnson, Gail Clifton (THE KLITZ), Tim Reagan (ANTENNA SHOES), Jason Freeman, ORACLE & THE MOUNTAIN, Craig Brewer, Steve Selvidge, Sid Selvidge, Robby Grant (VENDING MACHINE), Billy Gibson, THE THIRD MAN, Eddie Dattel (INSIDE SOUNDS), Marvin Stockwell (PEZZ), Khari Wynn (SOLSTICE), John Michael McCarthy, Chris Swenson, William Lee Ellis, Rachel Hurley, Tom Foster, and several others.Location shots have been in various spots (and in some cases, events) around midtown and downtown including the Full Moon Club, Then & Again art gallery, the Hi Tone, Blues City Café, Otherlands, Young Avenue Deli, Ardent Studio, Sun Studio, New Daisy Theatre, Black Lodge Video, Memphis Music Store, Shangri La Records, Goner Records, Rock 103 Offices, The Cooper Young Festival 2006 & 2007, The LiveFromMemphis Offices, The Stage Stop, Young Avenue Sound Studio, Elvis Presley Blvd., Beale St., Blues Hall, Java Cabana, The 2007 Memphis Music & Heritage Festival, Memphis Independent Studio, and The 2008 Beale Street Music Festival to name a few.The filming has continued into late 2008 and production/editing has started. At this point, Hackman and Parker are very pleased with the broad spectrum of angles and views that they are capturing from the local musicians. Farther down the line, when the film is completed, it will be submitted to a variety of independent film festivals. Look out for a trailer next year (2009).
