"Why should man expect his prayer for mercy to be heard by What is above him... when he shows no mercy to what is under him?" - Pierre Troubetzkoy
I care a lot about the problem of Global Warming and related climate destabilization.
"I... am more than human,
this body... is not my whole.
Comfort... is my enemy.
The hunger... is my goal.
And if I focus, resolutely,
I will change this world absolutely.
'Cuz it's mine... to re-arrange
and I will be this change."
-Exit Ophelia, Believe.
I've made a careful investigation of Global Warming, and this much is clear: Our planet is warming - we know this with absolute certainty. We know with absolute certainty that the greenhouse effect - where greenhouse gases warm the planet - is real. We know that the planet would be an iceball without the greenhouse gases that naturally exist in our atmostphere. We know that too many greenhouse gases will make the planet too warm.
We are nearly certain that we have caused the recent warming with our greenhouse gas pollution, and that the warming is not just some natural cycle. We know that the more greenhouse gas pollution we emit, the warmer the planet will become. We think that we will probably not like what happens to our world when we warm it, especially if we warm it a lot. A small amount of warming can be good in some places and bad in others, but a lot of warming is bad virtually everywhere. These changes that we are creating are unprecedented in their rate. We are, in decades and centuries, creating changes so big that the Earth would normally only experience them across millenia. We are shocking the system. The talking heads are pretty cavalier about it, but our scientists are afraid.
We have the technology to address this problem, right now. Our excuses of insufficient certainty, of waiting for the next invention... they have the hollow ring of procrastination. A mere reluctance to spend money or change habits. The resistance we offer to that which is inconvenient.
We will either act, and soon, or you will shrug helplessly and tell your children "My dog ate your planet." As in all things, it is your choice.
