Brooklyn's own, Shakeya Huggins, better known as Key, was raised in a world filled with song. Whether listening to her mother and aunts work out harmonies over breakfast or playing her grandmother's out of tune piano, she grew up intrigued by the land of music.After years of this organic voice training, at age 19 she recorded a demo with industry staple, Poogie Bell that drew attention of two major Japanese labels. Deciding with Toshiba EMI, Key's debut album, Thoughts from Key, was released February 2001 under production of Poogie Bell and Bruce Flowers.Having found herself at the threshold of what was to be a promising international career; Key struggled with the loss of her mother and decided to return home from Japan to Brooklyn. In the years that followed Key has emerged as a sought after session vocalist and writer. Her work has appeared in underground music labels as well as several major production houses such as the DFA and Amber Music.Influenced by Betty Carter, Erykah Badu, Sade and Billie Holiday, Key has found a sound for herself that is both haunting and naïve, approached from an abstract perspective. Using her time to hone skills and gain more knowledge of self, Key is taking back to the stage, ready to share her thoughts again.
