Dan the Illuminator

About Me

In general, I give light to the darkness, while being rather dark myself. I'm a difficult person, and even more difficult to get to know. I see the world clearer than most, but often miss what's right in front of me. I wear the peace sign and write "born to kill."

The Dan the Illuminator FAQ:

I. Complex, contradictory and conflicted, I'm not all things to all men, but many things to many people.I am the Illuminator, the Photographer, the Recognizer. What I lack in charm I make up in soul. My life is probably best explained by my Flickrpage.

II. I'm not nearly as stand-offish a prick as I first appear, but I'm selective in my dealings.
A. Please, no missionaries, salesmen or stalkers.

III. I have a radio show nowin its fifth ninth(!) year.

IV. My online presence is largely confined to my musical interests:
A. Discogs
B. Audiosquabbler
C. Soulseek

V. Whatever I am interested in, I am obsessed by. Currently it's ...God only knows. Take your pick: politics, headphones, photography, the end of the fricken world.

VI. I never leave well enough alone.
A. This is why my light setup is never quite the same twice.

VII. I'm not on MySpace for some "who can get the most friends" contest.
A. If you've got 52605 friends already and I've never heard of you, don't even bother asking. B. If you're someone I know, or someone who has half a clue and something in common with me, feel free to send me a friend request.

VIII. My profile is not the advertising section of MySpace. A. Don't post huge flyer graphics that fuck up the formatting. They will be deleted so fast they get whiplash. B. Fluid flyers will be tolerated for the time period that they are relevant.

Guess I'm in that 9%....

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

On MySpace? Fuck knows. I view this site as a necessary evil.

Professionally? DJs who remember to pay me. Especially ones who spin music I like and haven't completely crawled up their own ass yet.

Personally? Believers. People with faith, wisdom and patience. Anyone who's had their eyes opened.

Who do I not wanna meet? Republicans, cokeheads, corporate shills, meatheads, anyone affiliated with the military-industrial complex, the average American.

My Blog

Francophone Origins.

I discovered the last two profile songs I've had via (viral) videos.  The first is from the French band Zombie Zombie.  The video is an homage to John Carpenter's 198X film The Thing done with GI Joe...

It is done.

I've been a DJ since about 1996, but in that time, I have released exactly zero mixes. I've been working on one, off and on (mostly off) since I first started doing lights in some of the local nightcl...

Daddy Mulk.

In 1988, Taito released a side scrolling arcade game that used threecontiguous 9" CRTs (and a mirror) to make a "widescreen" format. Ipumped an awful lot of quarters into it when I was a in Jr. High. ...

Night of the long knives.

It's days like today that make me glad the worldwide ecosystem is failing.  Humanity is a virus with shoes.  It's a pity that the rest of the life on this planet has to die in order to get rid of the ...

Still fine tuning the Staturnine mix. It'll be ready when it's ready, no sooner. In the interim I offer a rare glimmer of hope: This video was created for the AARP U@50 video contest a...

In short order.

I will be releasing a DJ mix I started in the summer of 2004. The mix is complete, and I now have an all-but-finalized version done by a mastering engineer on the west coast. I won't be posting the ...

As I said previously, I have now restricted the downloads of my photos. Clever users will still be able tog to get 500x333 sized images (I'm not explaining how) but that is it. Soon I will write a "...

Very soon

I will stop giving away my photos for free.  After four years and well over four grand spent on camera equipment, I am sick of others profiting from my work and seeing nothing in return.

Postcard from the Information Age.

This marks the second trip I've made to MV with my Macintop in tow, but this is the first where I've had Photoshop and Photomatix loaded on to it. Additionally I brought my memory card reader. It ma...
