About Me

"Prairie Fire: Between the twin peaks of NO DEPRESSION (the 'zine) and Americana (the radio format), there's a lot of room out there for alternative country and various kinds of roots-rock to flourish. Trouble arises when a generation of twang-influenced artists absorbs the trappings but not the artistry; you wind up with a bunch of electrified wankers who sound like sub-Nashville versions of the Eagles and Alabama. But the upside comes in the form of a rare bird like CABIN, whose self-released CD is just this side of heaven. They're not so much country as country-inspired; in a way, CABIN's music harkens to psychedelic/acoustic hippie outfits like Mad River or McKendree Spring, connecting them to a strain of quiet roots bands like Son Volt or Lullaby For the Working Class. None of which tells you that Corey Smith's voice is perfectly heartbreaking or that the group's brilliant songs bowled me over the first time though and every spin since."
